Anyone have a kid that swims for more than one club?

My child swims with a club and likes it but also wants to swim with a friend. We would only compete for our current club and it would end up being five days of swimming a week for 75 minute sessions. Is this crazy? What am I getting myself into besides the money and time?

Overuse injuries
How old is the kid?

I don't think it is very common, but I have heard of a kid overlapping with USA swimming clubs and the Y swim clubs Does PVS or USA swimming have rules about it? That is what I would check into first.

You can do it. You just can't compete for more than one team, you have to compete for whichever team is the primary. I have known a few kids to do it. If your kid is going to switch from one team to another then they can still compete but unattached until they attach to the new team. If they are going to compete for the original team then they could swim unattached for their second team's meets if they wanted.

That amount of time and days is fine for 10 and older. I would not suggest a younger kid doing that.

I don't think you have to worry about overuse if the kid is younger and both clubs are working on all four strokes. I would worry if you did a lot of the same stroke.

Why don’t you just switch?

If they're young, I'd worry about burnout more than overuse.

OP here. Because they want to do both. I would prefer one club.

then make them pick. Tell your child they can’t do both. Life is full of choices.

OP I would let them do both and because burnout could be a problem you need to be able to pull the cord on one of the clubs if they are not loving it (and pay the penalty). I swam for two different clubs. Loved my old club but really wanted the coaching of my new club. I competed for my new club and would swim other meets unattached. For me it was fine. Kind of crazy, but I loved always being in the water.

Would you tell the clubs? I cannot them allowing this.

A little different OP but my kids swim with their club team three days a week and also swim with their summer team year round two days a week. My club doesn't know that they swim with another team. They do not compete in PVS with their summer team so that is not an issue. I am sure there are many kids who swim for a few different groups at the same time. As long as the kid is okay with it, it is fine.

I have an only and he lives to swim. He is swimming with a new club, four days a week, two hour practices. He still swims one day a week with his old club (they know) because he likes his friends. His old club worked out a special pricing for him and his situation which was awesome. He preferred his new program because it is one of the top programs in the area, where his old club was not but a lot of fun and with his boys.

It sounds like OP can afford the financial commitment. I would let my kid do it if they were asking for it. I just don't have a kid that would love that but I have a friend whose kid would totally jump for any chance to be able to swim.

I am guessing your kid is younger bc my kids’ club goes to 5 or 6/week for competitive 11-12s? Assuming your kid wants to be on that track if he is considering two clubs.

If you want my opinion, I wouldn’t do two clubs for my kid except in summer (summer pool and year round club).

Good luck with your decision.
