Seneca Valley High School

What the heck is happening there? Anyone know why the school went into lockdown again today? I'm hearing different stories but not seeing any news or information on the media about it.
It went on lockdown just two days ago and not a single peep from the media or the police. Why so hush, hush??

Nothing is happening AT Seneca Valley High School.

Here are the e-mails from Dr. Cohen about the first incident:

Good afternoon parents. At about 12:20 p.m., we had a report of possible gunshots across the street from the school. We went into a lockdown out of an abundance of caution. We have since been advised by Montgomery County Police that the situation is no longer an immediate threat to the school and have transitioned to a shelter in place. I will reach out again when we are no longer in a shelter in place.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that an incident occurred in the community this afternoon that required the school to Lockdown.

At 12:21 p.m., we received a report of possible gunshots across the street from the school. We immediately implemented our school’s emergency response plan and went into a lockdown. We then coordinated efforts with the Montgomery County Police Department to determine when it was safe to resume normal school operations. We have no reason to believe that today’s incident involved anyone from our school and it is important to share that all students and staff were kept safe and secure throughout the lockdown. Counselors will be on site tomorrow if your child has a need to talk with someone about this incident.

Here's the e-mail from Dr. Cohen about the second incident:

Good afternoon SV Community. I am writing to share that this afternoon, we were notified by the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) that an incident was happening off campus in the community. They directed that we go into lockdown and we did so. Soon after, MCPD advised that we could step down into a shelter-in-place and then resume normal operations. At no time was there a danger in the building or on the campus that we are aware of. We responded out of an abundance of caution. I will follow this message with a letter letter today.

So the only thing happening at Seneca Valley high school this past week are two lockdowns resulting from things like gunshots around Seneca Valley High School. That would make me feel so much better.

We did a year in Germantown. Nothing about this is surprising.

Well, no. What's happening at Seneca Valley High School is that the principal is doing what the police told him to do. The police aren't talking about their reasons. Maybe you should ask the police.

Also, if you do have a child at Seneca Valley High School, you already received the e-mails from the principal, and if you don't have a child at Seneca Valley High School, why are you posting on this thread?

I have a middle schooler who is assigned to Seneca Valley so yes, as a concerned parent of a future student there, I am interested in knowing what prompted 2 lockdowns in a matter of one week. I'm hearing different stories from gun shots to robbery to gang activity. It would be nice to have a bit more transparency..it almost seems intentional.

What, specifically, are you concerned about? The lockdowns had nothing to do with the school. They were in response to outside incidents. If you want more information about those outside incidents, ASK THE POLICE.

Let's start with what's happening in that neighborhood that is prompting the lockdowns. If it's not a safe area then yes, I am extremely concerned. Are you a parent at SVHS? If so, this isn't concerning to you?

+1. What prompted two lockdowns was the Montgomery County police and the SVHS Administration listening so as to ensure that students and staff were safe. Any immediate details would go out to the SVHS community because they were impacted. If you want more details reach out to the Police or to the MCPS safety office and BOE. SVHS Administration is responsible for sharing or seeking details for the whole of MCpS or the surrounding community.

Not the OP, but also interested. My child was forced to have indoor recess and stayed in a shelter in place all day at McAuliffe es. He came home and asked why. Is it really so bad to ask on this board for more info? It did impact my child and we got no information. And, yes, hearing that there are gunshots near our high school, even if they are not in the school, is scary.

There's a bit of a difference between a police chase through the street and shootings in the projects directly across from the school 2 days in a row. The school is about a city block from where that young man was shot this year. There is a big problem with gun violence in Germantown.
