Were there two incidents today? I’m so confused because the statement by the police in the news article doesn’t match what the principal sent to Churchill parents. This is Principal Taylor’s email:

Winston Churchill High School Families and Community:

I am writing to let you know about a serious incident that occured on Winston Churchill High School property today, Oct. 13. At approximately 11:35 while students were at lunch and returning after testing, an unknown assailant came onto the school property at the bus loop. This individual assaulted one of our Churchill students. When a parent intervened, the assailant threatened the parent and another Churchill student and then fled the property. 911 was called and members of the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) arrived to help us secure the area and investigate the incident.

Members of the administrative team, school staff and Security worked with MCPD to secure the building and assist with the safe arrival of our students from lunch. Thankfully, all of the Winston Churchill students involved are okay, and now home safe with their families. We entered into a Shelter-in-Place for the afternoon in order to notify staff and implement our emergency protocols to help secure the building. MCPD is conducting a full investigation and are confident they will apprehend the suspect, who they do NOT believe is a current or former Churchill student.

We will be implementing enhanced monitoring throughout the evening during activities and during dismissal, but all activities will continue as planned.

This is an unfortunate incident and we will work to implement safety protocols in conjunction with Montgomery County Public Schools Office of Safety and Security in order to ensure the ongoing safety of our students and staff. If you or your student has any information about this incident, please have them come to the main office and share with administration and security in order to support the investigation.

Sincerely,

Mr. John Taylor

Principal

Good thing Montgomery county leadership took the community police officers out of the high schools

Why doesn’t the principal mentioned that a knife was involved? Mr. Taylor also stated that the police did NOT think the assailant was a Churchill student or former student. All news agencies are quoting a police officer who identified the assailant as a Churchill student.

I am also concerned that a blast text message, email, and phone messages were not immediately sent home when the school went to shelter in place. Students were returning from lunch on a PSAT test day that not everyone was already at school. Students should have been told to stay away from Churchill if they weren’t already on campus. We get blast text, phone and emails for non safety issues such as weekly announcements so there is a better way to use existing communication channels for student safety.

Interesting that the kid lives in Potomac. While a few Whitman students live in Potomac, most are in Bethesda. It may be that this kid has been moved from Churchill to Whitman for behavior reasons, which happens on occasion. Presumably he knew the girl and it wasn't a random attack.

Ok. WUSA 9 is stating that the student who brought the knife to Churchill was a female student from Whitman High School. The police have her in custody.

So the perpetrator was a MCPS student, just not a Churchill student.

Clearly they didn’t need cops for these 2 incidents.

Threatening someone with a deadly weapon is a crime. Assault is a crime. The police made an arrest. Of course the police needed to be involved with what happened today at Churchill.

Nope, we'll keep our MS13. Right now they are less violent than the the Churchill kids.
