What do they mean by "external assessment"?

"The admission process for criteria-based programs uses a multiple measures approach that includes both district-level and externally-developed assessment of students. The data that will be considered include the student applicant responses, report card, student services^, and an external assessment. Teacher recommendations will not be collected. Due to the continued instructional interruptions of the pandemic, the CogAT (cognitive abilities assessment) will not be administered."

HS Magnet admission to criteria-based programs is not a lottery, so there is no cutoff. They evaluate the applicants and select candidates.

MCPS is transparent, in that, it is very clear that the priority of MCPS is to achieve EQUITY not EXCELLENCE. Hell, MCPS doesn’t even want to achieve competency.

The message is clear. They have gutted the MS Magnets, and changed the whole CES. Not sure what will happen with these types of high-performing HS magnets. We will find out in the next few years.

They do not always get it right because they don't have all the info. They thought they were offering a minority kid a spot recently (friend of my kid) but she is Argentinian, her parents went to UMD and have lived here at least 20 years. Wealthy. Not actual minorities...
