AC Milan boss calls for football to adopt basketball halfway line rule

Anonymous
AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has claimed that football should adopt a backcourt violation rule similar to that seen in the National Basketball Association in a bid to try and make the game more exciting for spectators.

The Rossoneri boss has explained how the rule change could encourage more attacking from teams if they were unable to spend large amount of time passing the ball around between their defenders and goalkeeper

So what do you think of this?

Dumb. Press better if you want them to come forward. And they also need to clarify whether there is a required time to cross halfway line as in bball. How about rules prohibiting more than X players behind your halfway line?

It makes perfect sense. If we do that, get rid of offsides and make the goals bigger, one day soccer might be among the top 5 most popular sports in the world.

Maybe a half point too if you throw the ball into the goal.

A 2 point line would be good to encourage long shots
And a 24 second shot clock

How about starting with these ideas instead:
1. Remove or modify the offside rule. For example, don't call offside anywhere 18 yards and in.
2. Also consider reducing the size of the box in which the goalkeepers can use their hands.

Freaking great idea. I would personally love this. Soccer can get really boring.

I do think a penalty box would be a great addition for different level fouls . Also I like unlimited subs but keeping the no re-entry rule.

They have proposed doing away with throw ins and replacing them with kick ins.

It would get A LOT more boring with a rule that compressed available space by half.

Would alter the types of players rostered for defense. You'd now see alot smaller, speedy guys because of the range that would need to be covered.

Would make a rule that only tall strong fast players can play all short technically proficient get very limited minutes if any at all.

It is interesting that this is even coming up. All the major US sports have adopted rule changes to either add offense or speed up play. The motivation is spectator revenue. All the purists cry foul whenever it happens too.

Soccer appears to be the one sport that hasn't changed substantially (other than styles) for decades. It would probably accelerate the adoption of soccer as a major sport in the US. This might not be the right rule change, but I can see the idea of adding offense gaining traction.

Yes because there are no big speed players
