THIN Car Seat Recommendations

Anonymous
We're currently trying to fit three kids in the backseat of my Accord. We need a new car but with the chip shortage have decided to wait a bit and see if we can't make the Accord work. I have one in a booster (in the middle), one rear facing and one front facing. I was looking at the Diono car seats (they promise 3-across). Does anyone have anything else that's super thin they'd recommend?

I would check the forums at carseat.org-- they usually are very good about recommending what works for 3 across in different cars.

I just finished putting 3 across in a Leaf, which I'm pretty sure is as narrow or narrower than an Accord. I used csftl.org as my main research place.

The hardest part for us was the booster seat. I would be wary of using a Radian as a booster seat, depending on how tall your kid is now. Apparently a lot of kids outgrow them before they can really be used as booster seats. My 4.5 yo daughter is already near the limit.

Otherwise, you could use two Radians for your other children. We ended up with a Radian for our middle child. We got a Clek Foonf for the baby because apparently sometimes the Radian angle makes it not a proper fit for infants, and I just wanted to avoid that.

The booster seat we ended up with was a Clek Oobr. My daughter will have to climb in and out of it buckled. There are videos for how to do this on I think carseatlady.org or something.

We were going to get a Maxi Cosi Rodifix for her, but you need to have a headrest behind it, and it wasn't compatible with our headrest. THe headrest pushed the booster seat too far forward.

If the Oobr didn't fit, we were going to try a RideSafer vest. So, you could try that for your booster seat child. Or is your booster seat child maybe big enough for a backless booster?

I have done a lot of research into this and I like Clek for car seats and Maxi Cosi Rodifix for high back booster.

Radians. My youngest is 5 and my 2 older kids are out of car seats now, but that is what we used for 3 across

The Mifold booster seats work great in a middle backseat and they’re also great for travel.

I would move the booster over. That’s the one seat that needs to be buckled and unbuckled every time. I would put this seat on one of the sides where the kid had a bit more space with an open door if necessary to get themselves buckled in. Put one of the installed seats in the middle. I have used a bubble bum and a mifold which are great for travel but not great for an every day seat. You have to make sure the part attached to the belt is in the right place every single time to position on the shoulder. And the bubble bum you need to make sure the Lao belt part is in the 2 guides on either side too. It’s time consuming. I have heard good things about Radian.

People outgrow the Radian? It is rated for 120 pounds and 57 inches. My 7 year old isnt even that tall. Your 4.5 year old is that tall?

I am asking because we are about to invest in new seats (middle child's seat is about to expire since hand me down from older) and baby is just about a year and will be out of baby bucket. Will be buying 4 seats. Was all set for diono radian qx. How are people outgrowing?

Or do you have the RXT without the movable headrest?

The question is does your Accord have latch and/or seatbelt for all three car seat positions? You need them to properly hold the seat in case of an accident.

We got the 3RXT. You can move the headrest wings, but you can't move the top of the sear up or down. https://csftl.org/diono-radian-3rxt-review/ This review shows a kid who has almost outgrown it at 4.5, and talks about the limitations of booster mode. My daughter had maybe a year left in it I would say, but we we won't really need it til Feb, and if we're buying something new, we figured we'd just buy a booster seat that she can start in Feb and use at last a couple years after that. There's no way she'd fit in the diono until she's ready for a no back booster.

I have 3 across in my civic in a Cosco Scerena and two Cosco Finales. Not the nicest seats, but far less than the Dionos and perfectly safe. Very easy to install

PP above, I had to do a seatbelt install to get them in safely and far enough apart

DP- mine outgrew the Radian because the torso length is too long. My kids have more height hips to shoulder then at the leg.

Thank you all! We ordered the Radian and are hoping that will work.
