| When and how is the Volvo a status car? Somehow it’s supposed to be classier than a Mercedes? |
| Because it’s boring, (assumed to be) reliable and safe. It aligns with how old money spends their money. |
| Volvo is a nice car, but "classier than a Mercedes"? I wouldn’t describe it that way. |
|
It was a status car in the 1970s when I was first old enough to notice cars and talk to friends about them. So, at least that long.
|
That’s what I was going to say too. |
| Early 80s when the yuppies were all driving them |
Yes, it also doesn't have very flashy lines and usually comes in subdued colors. |
| I don't know if it's a status car. It's a semi-luxury nice family car that's safe and more "under the radar" than a mercedes. Plus, I associate Mercedes's with people in their 50s+. |
| Original Volvo was always a status symbol in America for upwardly mobile middle class families. It was a company constantly innovating with design and safety. The brand took a nosedive when Ford took over and made Volvo about as innovative as a Taurus. Geely buying it was the best thing that could have happened, and for the past decade, Volvo has once again regained its footing as a smart choice for people with money. |
| Quite a while ago. In the late ‘70s, it was the station wagon of choice for preppy families dropping their offspring off at school. This was when they were a Swedish company, before Ford got involved. I’m not clear that they’re Still a status car, but that wasn’t the OP’s question. |
| Since 2018 they made their cars flashier so that is what I can assume you may be referring to. But they are not as flashy as a Mercedes or high end BMW. Certainly my 2016 S60 was not a head turner but it sure was a nice car to own. I bought it because it was “under the radar.” |
| Among car enthusiasts, absolutely nothing about volvo indicates any type of status |
|
If you want people with money (who also know cars) to think you have money, too - drive a Volvo.
Because they know how much it costs to keep those POS’s running. |
In your expert car enthusiast opinion what car does reflect status (under 70k). |
Lol, according to who? Volvo is like a nicer Subaru. They are like the Birkenstock and Crocs of the automotive world, respectively. |
