How long did it take for you to feel comfortable at your new job?

3 months, 6 months, 1 year?

I just start a job with a steep learning curve. I'm trying to stay motivated but it is hard some days.

Hmmm about 5 months

I am awake now because I will never feel comfortable at my new job. I have been there over a year. I am 52. I have been fired from every job I have had since turning 40. Work has been brutal.

A year

I took about 3 years before I stopped feeling like the new kid at my current job (although obviously I could function earlier than that). But the things that made me feel like it took forever to get up to speed are also the things that make it interesting years later.

At my job for 14 months. Can function, but still feel very uncomfortable.

This has likely been exacerbated by Covid, since most people work from home as much as possible. As I result I have a minimal (or no) relationship with my new colleagues. It can also be really challenging to get questions answered.

Additionally, the person who hired me moved up in the organization. My new boss has less experience than me, but I was told that he was promoted over me because he is familiar with the organization. He works almost entirely from home; I haven’t seen him in 8 months.

I hate it, but I try to look on the bright side: I’m unlikely to get fired because I’m not even sure that anyone knows I work there!

About a year. I started in covid and have been fully remote so it’s been slow.

I’ve started a number of jobs over the years. The first few months are the worst but it usually takes about a year to feel competent.

It sounds like there’s something else going on with you.

What happened at these jobs that led you to be fired?

That is very impressive that you were able to find many jobs over the years after being fired each time! How did you explain why you have been fired to every new employer?

STEM field - 6 months to feel like I have the ropes. One year to feel like I really know what I'm doing.

I’ve been in my current role for eleven months and felt comfortable (as in, not awkward or nervous) after six months. However, the organization is an utter shit show and I’m paid peanuts, so I’m interviewing.

I noted increase comfort at months 6 and 12. I've been at my current job for almost 6 years.

I'd say about 9 months. I've been in my position now 11 months and I have a good grasp on what I'm doing, though I'm still very much learning my role and about specific tasks that are very uncommon. I'd say in another year, I will feel really confident. It usually takes me 6-9 months to really adapt. There's this honeymoon phase, the "I can't believe I signed up for this!!" and "maybe I should have stayed at my last job" phase until I move into.."I've got this and am not half bad!".
