How to keep tankini top from floating up? Willing to sew something...

Anonymous
I like tankinis. They tend to rise up when in the water. What would be the best way to attach it to the bottoms? Velcro? a snap? I can sew, but I need ideas.

Why not buy a one-piece?

Yeah. Just buy a one-piece.

I only wear tankinis and I only very occasionally have that problem. Maybe change your brand.

It’s hard to find a one piece that fits my torso correctly. Also I like the separates to mix and match. I also love the boy shorts. Not OP but I’d love to find a way from floating up as well.

The only brand I've had this problem with is the newer styles from Lands End that were made to be more floaty or something around the torso. I hate them and think they make me look pregnant, in addition to floating up in the water. It's hard to sew anything onto swim suit material. I think your best bed would be strings from an old bikini or something and attach them right at the hem.

You can’t have the floaty ones it has to be tight in your abdomen, which I’m assuming you don’t want.

Not solving your problem but I wear a one piece Speedo and men’s swim trunks over the top. I feel like it hides my tummy roll and thigh area.

Tighter elastic around the bottom? Or just add a tuck around the bottom so that it's not so loose?

Velcro would work (I mean, it would stick in the water), but you'd get weird bunching -- velcro at the right spot for when you were standing up would not be right for when you were sitting down.

Could you tuck it in to the bottoms when you were in the water?

Sew the top to the bottom.

Lands end tankinis sometimes have a second layer underneath that will stay down even if the top floats up, but the layer is white and it's ugly. The only tankinis I've ever had that didn't float up were super tight.

Are you wearing the right size? Are they cheap on the spandex/elastic? Is it old or from last season?

I haven't had that problem and I've worn tankinis for years. After awhile they do loosen from wear n' tear, stretching, sun, chlorine, salt water, etc so maybe you just need to get a new one every year.

What brand Op?

Bra hooks? One side on the inside of the top, one side on the outside of the bottom.

Where would it need to be anchored to prevent too much floating? If there were a loop of some sort on the inner side seam of the top, could you attach that to a button added inside the waistband of the bottoms. (Or vice versa, if a button on the top is less irritating.) It might be the sort of thing that doesn't look normal out of the pool, but you could fasten if needed.

It would be an easy fix to sew a band to the bottom. Measure where you want
the band to sit, remember the fabric will stretch so it should be snug.
Gather the bottom of the tank to fit the band and attach. You can sew some
elastic into the seam, just don't stretch it as you sew. Hope this helps. I make
my own swimwear and pantys because I am allergic to the latex in the elastic. Just use
swim fabric, you wont need much.
