The MyLife scam site already knows my sister recently divorced. How did it find that out so quickly?

Anonymous
Every once in a while I search for my name online along with other family member's names just to see what is out there. One of the sites I came across already knows about my sister's recent divorce. Recent as in late last year. Is there anything that can be done to prevent these types of scam websites from obtaining personal information?

Court records

Stop clicking on that site - don’t support it.

Divorce records are public information.

that's not secret info.

btw check any terms and conditions of any social network. i believe they collect a lot more than just info about divorces.

It is impossible to have MyLife remove personal (often incorrect) info! Calling, e-mailing doesn't work.

It’s really weird to be searching for family members on paid sites like that.

Some states require a personal request in order to obtain such information. At least to my knowledge.

The names are all grouped together. You enter one name and then some of your family member's names also appear.

Why do you call it a scam site? How did it scam you (or someone else?)

Yes, but presumably you already knew your family members names? You still had to request a background scan on them and enter info and wait (ran one on alcoholic spouse to find hidden arrears- it’s a scam)

This site has my correct name and address but puts my age at 20 years younger (thank you!) and has a picture of someone else.

Thanks for the tip - I’ve been looking for a way to get boyfriends and it’d be nice to know if they were married without doing a background check.

Take the information with a grain of salt. It's not particularly accurate. I had myself removed from all those sites because 1) it's no one business where I live, how old I am etc. 2) Much of the info was flat out wrong.

I know a widower and a divorced woman who both show up as married. The widower's wife died 7 years ago.

There is someone living a few States away with my same age and same first and last name. (I sometimes get her emails by mistake.) The MyLife report is for a person, half of whose information matches mine and the other half presumably matches hers.

No. Basic info is given without having to pay anything.
