Bosch Dishwasher terrible chemical smell, need recco for a dishwasher

Anonymous
Help! My old kenmore dishwasher stopped working and we bought a new Bosch dishwasher with stainless steel interior from Homedepot to replace it. The smell after washing was horrendous. It smells like asphalt and burning rubber. Several runs later with vinegar and at the hottest setting, the smell has not gone away. This model was recommended by consumer report and I am not seeing that this toxic smell is being mentioned everywhere on internet.

I do not mind if a dishwasher is not super quite but I need an efficient dishwasher because we use dishwasher heavily. Can anyone recommend their new dishwasher? The bosche dishwasher had a stainless steel interior and I am wondering if this is a factor?

Yes, it is under warranty. We reported the smell within 6 hours of it being installed and if reported within 48 hours, Homedepot will do an exchange or a refund.. I have run the dishwasher a number of times now, with water, with detergent, with vinegar and the smell is God-awful. We requested that they take the dishwasher back and they first wanted to do an installation check on Tuesday. We thought about exchanging it with another unit, but it has spooked me so bad (especially after reading the horror stories online) that I do not want a bosch anymore. The bosch unit was very quite and I am sure it cleans well too but frankly I can live with a noisy unit as long as it cleans well and has no odor. We are a family of 5 and our dishwasher runs at least twice a day.

If you’re not seeing complaints of smell online, and people here are saying they don’t smell, why not let them see if it was installed wrong?

Looks like our made in the USA kitchen aid is at Home Depot too
Best Buy sent a great installer, it was a local kitchen remodel company they contracted it out to

There’s a massive ongoing recall due to risk of fire from the power cords of some models .

The chemical smell is also a known problem especially with lower end boschs .

I just bought this dishwasher and love it. I wouldn’t say that it’s ‘quiet’ but it does a great job cleaning. We run it on express wash which takes an hour.

At bray and scarff it was $1600 and we got $200 back in rebates

We had the same issue with our brand new Bosch. The asphalt smell was eye watering and soaked into all our silicone and plastic items. It was disgusting. The smell, apparently, is from the bitumen used to coat the stainless steel tub as noise deadening material. We replaced the Bosch for a Kitchenaid (Model # KDTM354DSS). It is slightly louder but no issues with smell.

So the initial cause of the mold is not your fault in most cases with the Bosch brand. They come with mold in them from the factory due to a flaw in their testing process which is to not completely dry the unit before it is sealed up, shipped, and sits in a warehouse for weeks or months. Once there is mold in you unit, you CANNOT EVER get rid of it completely. Mold spores require some pretty heavy duty sterilization (usually with chlorine bleach) to kill them. You can't use bleach in your dishwasher without destroying the rubber seals and parts. Once the mold starts, you are hooped. You'll never get rid of it. All you can ever hope to due is control it by always using the SANITIZE cycle and never closing the door. Even then, it is tough.

Bosch is notorious for this. Bought mine at HomeDepot and after I returned the first one, the sales person admitted that it is a problem with 3 out of 4 Bosch units. (nice of them to tell me after the fact.)

When you first unpack your dishwasher, open it up. If you see ANY residue at all....IT IS MOLD! Water dries clear and does not leave any visible residue on the stainless steel. IF you see ANYTHING. SEND IT BACK!

Never had a Bosch so I can’t compare, but I agree with the recs for Kitchenaid. Mine is fantastic.

Is this a Bosch 100 series? We are getting one tomorrow. Now I am worried.
