Bosch Dishwasher terrible chemical smell, need recco for a dishwasher

no way is it normal for a dishwasher to smell. I don't care about dishwasher brands but i had a bosch and it was perfectly fine.

Cost approx $ 750-800. Rated high by CR. From Home Depot. It also had some water and black grime inside when the installers unpacked...so I guess it is not completely draining when the factory tested it.

The installation seems ok, the drain hose has been looped correctly to ensure that there is no backflow.

+ 1. Op here. I can understand differences in size, features, color and noisiness, but not the horrible asphalt ell. It is gag-inducing.

OP here with an update. After much back and forth, Home Depot agreed to give us another unit from Bosch - same model. Thanks to some of the tips on this thread. I inspected the unit when it got delivered for mold etc. Aired it out before it got installed the next day. It is working great now. I suspect that in the previous unit the bitumen was not properly "cured". Thank you all.

"we bought a new Bosch dishwasher with stainless steel interior from Homedepot to replace it. The smell after washing was horrendous. It smells like asphalt and burning rubber. Several runs later with vinegar and at the hottest setting, the smell has not gone away. This model was recommended by consumer report and I am not seeing that this toxic smell is being mentioned everywhere on internet.

I do not mind if a dishwasher is not super quite but I need an efficient dishwasher because we use dishwasher heavily. Can anyone recommend their new dishwasher? The bosche dishwasher had a stainless steel interior and I am wondering if this is a factor?"




This exact thing has happened to me!!! I have contacted Bosch and they seem to never have heard of this problem?!?!?

The bad thing is we are past our 48 hours that Home Depot will help, therefore to return it, we will have to pay a 15%(over $100) restocking fee. [

We bought a Bosch silencePlus 50 and it has smelled since Day 1. I've had the service guy here 3 times and they all say use a sanitizer, done that, still smells. Tried leaving door open, still smells. I'm so over this diswasher because it's smells so bad. My friends have the same model and there's is fine. WTH?

All I can say is keep fighting Bosch corporate! No one should have mold smell after use. Myself, I opted for Miele on sale and for six years, no problem. Good luck everyone!

We dumped our new Bosch for a Miele after a year. It was a horrible dishwasher. Miele has been great.

A few years ago we returned a Kenmore dishwasher made by Bosch because of off-gasing issue. We worried the bad smell may cause cancer in the long run. The smell gave us a burning sensation in the throat. We finally bought a Miele G6625 last month. No tar odor so far.

I went to a Miele experience center in the nearest city to get more details and do a "smell test" myself before the purchase. People at the center was surprised about the tar smell. Each Miele dishwasher, regardless of model numbers, also has a layer of bitumen outside the stainless steel tub for soundproofing purpose, but we only had some new plastic smell during the first use and not pungent tar odor. After a couple uses, the new plastic smell went away. No tar smell like the Kenmore/Bosch from day one.

Miele dishwashers are expensive, but if we add the potential health care cost and suffering down the road, they are still cheaper than other brands that release toxic gas.

Just bought a Bosch from Bray and Scarff and it stinks to high heaven! Why is this still an issue?

I cannot find a dishwasher made without Bitumen aka asphalt. When it heats up it off gases for years. We measured the VOCs inside the machine while off. It was three times higher than our indoor air which meant unhealthy. It is not just This brand. It’s every brand now. It started in 2018 and now it’s impossible to find a dishwasher without Bitumen. Please let me know if you know if you find one.

I have an 800 series Bosch that was recently installed and I've had absolutely no issues with smell.
