My 30th is next month and I am clueless.
It is in Massachusetts, fwiw. |
| What kind of event is it? My 15th was a dinner at a nice restaurant while my husband's 20th was an afternoon barbeque. |
| Stirrup pants, a loooong sweater, and uggs. |
| Botox, and a wealthy entrepreneur on your arm. |

There are some funny answers above, I have to admit! It will be difficult for anyone to help you without more information.
What type of event is it (or are there multiple events?)? What time of year is it? If you want some specific links to possible outfits (which I love to do for people in this forum), you are going to have to tell us more about your body in particular...how tall are you, do you carry extra weight somewhere you like to hide, etc.? |
I agree, I am LMAO at the responses here. Ok, this is the deal: The (one and only) event is at a Sons of Italy hall in a Massachusetts town in the evening and involves appetizers and cocktails. Not formal - but I don't want to look like I'm at work, or running errands, either. I am 48yo, 5'2" and about 20 lbs overweight. I carry my weight in my hips and butt, but also have a relatively thick waist. I'm completely open to suggestions and equally comfortable in pants as in a dress. I don't do skirts much because they don't tend to flatter my body shape. Any ideas? |
| OP here - adding, it is early next month (October), so the weather will be cool. October in Mass. is cooler than Oct. in D.C. |

Assuming it is a Saturday evening event - I would dress similarly to a wedding (non black tie of course).
If it is a day time event - I would go with a more casual dress (think Boden) |
| I attended my high school reunion last year. I wore a dress that I would wear for a nice dinner out. It was the same level of formality as something I would wear to work, but a bit sexier. I advise against wearing a dressy pantsuit or anything with sequins. The women who dressed like that at my reunion all looked about 5 to 10 years older than the rest of us. It is hard at our age - you don't want to look old and frumpy, but you also don't want to look like you are trying too hard to look young. |
OP here, agreeing with you. That is indeed the challenge. I may cruise the Internet and run some ideas by you all on this thread. Thanks. |

I have found the best place for dresses is Lord and Taylor - so if you are ready to go and try stuff on - get your Lord and Taylor Coupon (they always have 20% off coupons - but will not give it to you unless you have your coupon) and head over to the store at Tysons.
Also, even if you never wear it again, go and get some Spanx. I used this post baby and felt really good about how I looked for a wedding. Since you still have a month - if you want to firm up a bit - try Jillian Michaels 30 dya shread. You will definitely see additional tone in your arms within 2 weeks. Just an fyi - I was at a Sons of Italy Hall 20 yr HS reunion last month for my husband. There really was a variety of clothes and styles worn as this was upstate NY - and I have to be honest - no one cared. (Everyone was talking about the 20 year olds that 2 guys took as there dates) |
| I would wear nice dark jeans, a nice top, cute heels, and some nice accessories. |
| I just went to my 30th HS reunion in May. The women generally wore dresses to the Sat night event. No sequins, mostly nice sundresses/casual dresses. I got mine at Ann Taylor. Not a lot of flashy jewelry or anything like that. |
| If you don't want to wear a skirt, I would wear a nice pair of black pants, heels, and a dressy top. |
