Are more rich kids doing ROTC at college?

Seems like it. What's the angle here? Launch political career? Or just looks good for elite medical school or law school applications?

The only person I know who is doing it is not rich

Define "rich"

I know two UMC kids who did this because their families did not qualify for financial aid. It was a great leadership experience, but their parents fretted terribly while they were in Afghanistan. It is not simply a scholarship, it is a commitment.

Upper middle class is not rich.

I think kids in general choose ROTC because they see what a value it is. They have an interest in getting a college degree and starting their career as an officer in the military. They want to use their talents to serve our country and they see the enormous benefits of having a decades long career in the military.

Tiger Mom herself had a kid that is doing ROTC at Harvard. They're worth several million dollars. Base at YLS is probably $250k x 2 + her speaking engagements and book royalties.

What if you're a financial aid student already, or have an education trust to pay for college? Would you then get paid to do ROTC?

I did ROTC. The message ALWAYS was "if you are doing this only for he free education you WILL NOT make it through the program."

You really do have to have an interest in having a career in the military. The free tuition is a plus, but cannot be the only reason one does it.

Daughter (much less at risk than a son), who feels the need to prove herself as more than just a child of privilege (her account).

rotc only came back to the ivy league recently. it wasn't on campus in the early-mid 2000's when i was in school.

that's why you are seeing an uptick of 'umc' kids in rotc. umc-rich schools like the ivy league didn't ahve rotc for decades.

Tim Kaine and Mike Pence's son both did it. I thought that was interesting.
