Love Bill Bryson. Laughed out loud at Tina Fey’s memoir and have enjoyed Mindy Kaling’s books. Nora Ephron for sure. Anne Lamott. Short stories by Miranda July, George Saunders, Lorrie Moore. Maria Bamford’s Sure I’ll Join Your Cult. Stephen Fry’s The Liar. |
+1 Bill Bryson is a treasure |
| I haven't read the whole thread, so maybe someone has already mentioned these books, but Julie Shumacker's Jason Fitger books (Dear Committee Members, The Shakespeare Requirement, and The English Experience) are truly laugh out loud funny -- especially for anyone who teaches or works in academia. I just read The English Experience a few weeks ago, and I can't stop recommending it; I rarely laugh out loud while reading, but I did while reading that book! |
Me too! Love that book. So different from the rest of his books. Second what others have said, too - Jonathan Tropper, Jen Lancaster (her memoirs more than her fiction), Jenny Lawson. I think it is easier to be funny in a memoir than in fiction. |
+ everything. There are so few Ignatius fans on here, I had to defend repeatedly on DNF threads |

This is OP and I am going to go download that right now! |
I think he is such a genius and so much is going on that some readers don't find it all that funny because they don't get it. He creates layers and layers and layers of complex social commentary that look, on the surface, almost cartoonishly simple. People miss a lot of it. And most of what is really hilarious is down a few layers. I remember way back in the 90s a boyfriend and I were watching the movie version of "Cold Comfort Farm" and we were almost falling off of the couch with laughter. We were watching it because my roommate had rented it, and it wasn't due back at the Blockbuster yet (you might not remember those days, lol). Anyway, she comes out into the living room, confused by our laughter. She and her friend had watched it and didn't think it was funny at all. Like they didn't even realize it was a comedy. Which seems impossible, just like it seems impossible for people to not appreciate Confederacy, but it happens. |

The Thursday Murder Club
The Man Who /died Twice by Richard Osman |
Dear Committee Members was really funny! |
| He died young, so there are only two or three books by David Rakoff but they are very funny. I listened to them and he was the narrator. Deadpan, funny. I liked Sloane Crosley’s books, though they are not laugh out loud funny, but funny. |

Too lazy to read all the replies but
Let’s Pretend This Never Happened is a good one! |
| I’ll Take It by Paul Rudnik had me laughing until I cried. |
| Early David Sedaris. Me Talk Pretty One Day is genuinely funny. The Sex Lives of Cannibals by J. Maarten Troost. A lot of Bill Bryson, particularly A Walk in the Woods. Nora Ephron - I Feel Bad About My Neck. Bossypants by Tina Fey |
