Do you have insight into why the grades are low?

ACT 32 is really good what is going on?

From the first post:

Now seeing a doctor and a therapist to treat ADHD and anxiety and doing much better academically in 1st quarter grade 11.

Grades:
9th: 2.74 unweighted; 3.03 weighted (4 honors classes)
10th: 2.68 unweighted; 2.9 weighted (3 honors classes)
overall GPA 2.73 unweighted; 2.98 weighted

1st quarter 11th: 3.79 unweighted; 4.29 weighted (3 APs, 1 honors classes)

ACT: 32
SAT: 1360

Is there any hope for a 4-yr college, especially in-state (Virginia)?

Why is 4-yr so important? Community College is perfect for this student - 2 years of good supportive teaching, followed by a guaranteed transfer to a number of VA schools. Just watch out for getting put into remedial courses - submit appropriate tests so that doesn't happen. CC is a useful thing - don't dismiss it.

Community college in Virginia does not necessarily work for all VA state schools' programs. Students need to read the details about the "guaranteed transfer" program.

The OP stated their DC would love to attend VCU, and mentioned theatre as EC. VCUArts does not participate in the Guaranteed Admissions Agreement, although VCU does. So the "community college is perfect for this student" statement may not be the case.

Does VCUarts participate in the Guaranteed Admissions Agreement?

VCU has entered into guaranteed admission agreements with the Virginia Community College System and Richard Bland College, as well as a number of program articulation agreements. However, because of the specific requirements to your VCUarts application major, VCUarts does not abide by the Guaranteed Admissions Agreement.

Sure. Our DS applied to three out-of-state state schools and a private and was accepted to all with just slightly over a 3.0 and an SAT of 1100.

Can you share the schools? Our DD is in the same position and is convinced Community College is her only option.

Not to be the thread pessimist, but 1st quarter grades mean literally nothing. It's the easiest quarter of the year, by far. Let us know what semester grades end up being.

No, not at all my experience and I have two in HS.

+2

Not with multiple AP courses plus honors.

I have a similar kid thinking of community college and the guaranteed transfer program. We have read the information and it looks like an easy path to UVA or VT if she keeps her grades up at community college. Am I missing something?

If the Guaranteed Admissions Agreement (which is different from Guaranteed Transfer) works for the program you are seeking, you are correct, it is an easy path to UVA or VT.

The PP mentioned the Guaranteed Admissions Agreement is not for all programs, including VCUArts.

I swear there are people on here paid to promote this

Difference between guaranteed admission and guaranteed transfer? Any hope for OP if she goes to CC for one year and tries to transfer?

Not a hope for VCU Arts.

To promote what? Non-stellar GPAs?

OP, I remember those worries and thought DC's options would be much more limited than they were. ADHD and LDs were first diagnosed at the end of freshman year. DC had a very similar GPA trend as yours (but lower SAT scores). Weighted GPA entering senior year was 3.2-3.3. DC was involved in a couple of long-term ECs outside of school, some volunteer work, a summer internship, no leadership positions. DC wrote a great essay, and I suspect the counselor wrote an enthusiastic recommendation based on DC's academic improvement and course load. DC did not progress past year 3 of language instruction but took 8 APs (all humanities/arts). I encouraged DC to do everything possible to maximize the chance of admission -- apply EA, make lots of "contacts" (visit school before applying, sign up for meetings at high school, do an interview if possible, open emails from the school). DC was accepted at VCU, UMW, CNU & University of Vermont, with merit aid offered at 2 of those 4. Currently at VCU & loves it.

I suspect OP's DC already has an IEP and gets time and a half or double time for the ACT.
