You must be doing something wrong.

Sorry for the relative ignorance, but just wondering how a 1300 PSAT/NMSQT is for a 9th grader who did no test prep at all. So that's roughly equivalant to a 1380 on the real SAT? Is that a score for a 9th grader that, if kept on track or improved a bit over the next 2 years, could perhaps contribute towards getting in to an excellent school? (I'm thinking UW Madison, Amherst, Smith, but not ivy league).

Thanks for the input. I promise to become better informed over the next few years.

That's a pretty darned good score for a beginning of the year 9th grader. I assume your DC has had Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Chemisty already?

Maybe you can ask the guidance counselor at the school for help.

DDs scores did not initially show. She entered additional info into her account (she had not included home address, for ex), closed program, reopened and it was there.

I don't think that's how it works (though it would require someone with a better math SAT score than I to explain why). The top PSAT score is adjusted down to 1520 to account for the PSAT being slightly easier than the real SAT. In other words, a perfect PSAT score of 1520 should translate to a slightly below perfect score of 1520 on the SAT.

10th grader's grades are awful - really bad - but he shocked us and scored in 99th%ile on PSAT. Maybe he has a shot at college now? How much does a great score count if the grades suck?

How can a beginning of the year 10th grader have all of the courses under his belt to score that high? Does he get terrible grades in really advanced classes?

Don't get me wrong, I think that is truly wonderful! If he wasn't taking a pretty heavy course load in middle school and 9th grade, he must be studying/playing with numbers/reading literature on his own.

Any guesses on the NMSQ score in VA? 207?

The scores are different than in the past. Previously, you got 3 scores, each out of 80 so a high score is 240. The NSMQ scores were 3 digit numbers that started with 2.

Now there are 2 scores, each out of 720. I don't know what the qualifying score is, but it's almost certainly a 4 digit number starting with 1.

My guess is 212.

I was a 3.0 kid in HS with 99%+ SAT scores. I didn't get into any good schools and almost flunked out of the mediocre school I did get into. I managed to turn it around when I got into a major I liked (close to 4.0 for last couple of years in undergrad) and got good grades in a very good graduate school (had excellent GRE scores). High SAT scores and low grades usually means very smart but unmotivated, and schools generally don't like that.
