Tiny brown flecks in toddler urine?

Anonymous
To the parent in Toronto: Hope all is well. Would you mind sharing an update? My daughter, almost 3, has small flecks in her urine. I’m waiting for her doctor to call back. Thanks.

I haven’t read through all the replies here but my guess is a little poop from wiping. My DD, 3, sometimes wipes and gets poop in her vagina and it comes out when she pees next

My 3 year old son is potty training and I just noticed he had black pepper flake like specks in his urine. He did drink less fluids today then other days and it’s the first time I’ve seen these flakes in his urine. I hope it’s not a uti since he has had one before. I don’t think it’s related to poop since he poops on toilet and I wipe him well after with wipes.

Wow. Wish I found this thread earlier! We just went through the exact same thing with our potty training 2 year old last week. The quick test on her urine showed abnormalities, but then the culture came back clean. She was showing all the signs of a UTI including flecks in urine, constantly feeling like she had to go, and only very little urine each time. She’s also been slightly constipated (bowel movements every other day) which can lead to UTIs. Pediatrician was perplexed. Odd, since it seems so common. Her urine was clear again the next day.

Hi ! Faced a similar issue with my twin daughters.. Noticed tiny brown grain like things once I started potty training them. More so with dehydrated urine. Had sleepless nights worrying about it. Myself being a doc contacted all my paeds colleagues. Since the kids are asymptomatic we hv been asked to give them plenty of water and watch for 2 months. If need be I will be going in for urine routine and culture. Ultrasound has been put on hold.. Everyone is taking it easily, so fingers crossed. Thanks to all who have posted here, makes u feel it's nothing uncommon u r dealing with.

My almost 3 year old son, who recently potty trained has had these twice today. But I noticed them another time and thought they were just flecks in the toilet, not from his urine but today I realized it is from his urine. No other symptoms. The flecks are small and brown, but quite a bit of them in toilet. He didn't complain of pain. Has urinated often today and drinking plenty of fluids. I am so worried that something is up. Dr wants to bring him in for a test. Anyone ever get a diagnosis they can share? Hoping he is ok but especially hope it is something treatable if it is something.

Hello all! I have been scouring the Internet looking for answers while we await a nephrology appointment, and found this page. I was wondering if anybody has updates on their child with the brown/black specks in urine? Our two-year-old daughter had sediment in her urine, almost sand like, and tested for trace blood, but no infection. She has no other symptoms and also potty training (not great with drinking water and I’m not convinced she fully empties bladder). Dr is perplexed that there are no other symptoms. Recently the specks have disappeared, but her urine seems to have super small fibers/hair like pieces in it. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself and thinking it could be from her pull up, but they are dark in color. Can anyone shed some insight?!

Hi- my son has pepper like flakes in his urine .. he had a fever 2 days ago but nothing since. Doesn’t hurt him to pee. Curious if anyone has found answers. We’ve sent a sample out.

My LO is 3.5 and she is having these brown specks in her urine. It happens ever so rarely between several clean clear urines . Only one time there was this yellow sand like deposit in her urine which had us worried. Pediatrician was perplexed and said he never heard of anything like this.
Can any one from the earliest posts comment back with any tips or suggestions

Posting to add to the collective group here that our son is 26 mo, two wks into potty training and this started occurring. Lots of logic on here in regards to new patterns / long holding / possible dehydration / peeing into a waterless mini potty/ etc. Perhaps just another odd toddler thing! (No other symptoms). Weird doctors haven’t picked up on this trend. Found a random online link here if helpful,
https://www.healthcheckup.com/general/what-causes-black-specks-in-urine/amp/. It notes that it could be caused by a range of things (uti, etc) but could just be “ In most of the cases, these are remains of cells in the urinary tract that fall off and get carried along with the urine.” not going to stress unless he had more symptoms.
