UMD vs UVA

UVA students are very preppy. It's an elitist campus. UMD has all types of students. Which school you pick will depend on what type of people you want to be around. And there is nothing wrong with rich and preppy.

Also at UVA you have to apply to get into clubs and be active on campus (you have to apply for everything). At UMD while there are some clubs you need to apply to (professional ones) it's not the bulk of the clubs so it's not as difficult for a student to get involved on campus and show future employers they're active and well-rounded.

So DS is starting at a new private and matriculation to UVA is strongly favored over UMD and I'm trying to understand why.... I think I've gotten my answer.

This has to be a troll post. Almost every ranking of best looking college campuses has UVA included. I have never seen UMD mentioned.

this is, of course, totally false. you do not have to "apply to everything". There are like 900 clubs and maybe you have to apply to 20 of them, namely the business related clubs and some others like the U tours and debating, plus many of the club sports. That leaves about 800 clubs available. Plus it's super easy to start your own!

It's very easy to become involved at UVA and it is very well looked up on by recruiters at all employers. Being smaller, there are less UVA grads out there as well, so you're not just one of dozens of folks from your college applying places.

UVA is more well known obviously.

Majors are important here. Are they accepted into their chosen major at both schools or do they have to matriculate? If they have to matriculate at one and not the other then that is the school they pick.

Otherwise, frankly the schools are quite different. Maryland is much larger (double the undergrad pop?) and in a crap city. That being said, it's close to DC for semester internships.

If I were OOS for both, I'd pick UVA. More of a true college exp, college town, more community (less commuters), better ranked.

What's the basis for stating this? The College Park campus itself is nice. It's college, not a resort.

It's not like Charlottesville is a utopia or anything.

I agree with this. Preppy was the 1980s. I remember visiting UVA then, as a High schooler. It WAS preppy but it isn't so much any more. I went back recently with my own HS-ers and found it incredibly diverse.

You always bring this up. I’m pretty sure we can find a white supremecist grad from UMD too. Richard Spencer also attended Colgate, Chicago and Duke. Do you also say that those are racist schools? I hope so, otherwise it may just look like you have a grudge against UVA. This rally had nothing to do with UVA. You act like it was students out there when most of the attendees came from well out of state.

We live in MD. We have 2 kids at UMD. UMD has been great. But I will admit that UVA has more status as a tougher admit for OOS. One of my kids applied to UVA and didn’t get in. He likely would have picked UMD even if he had because of the enormous cost savings. We’ve been to UVA/Charlottesville many times and I didn’t see the appeal of the area for a college student. College Park isn’t charming but its a fun town and convenient to DC which many students take advantage of. I worry about crime there but we were accosted on the pedestrian mall (not sure the official term) in Charlottesville so I didn’t feel safe there at all.

That’s the downtown mall. Most students don’t spend a lot of time there, unfortunately it is not very safe. Students hang out at the bars on the Corner and at Greek houses if they are not homebodies.

idk.. someone on this forum said UVA grads are more "poised", as if it was like a finishing school or something.
