Why aren’t lockers being used in middle and high schools?

Yes! The kids have to carry their binders, laptop, pencil pouches and headphones and stuff falls all the time. It sucks.
+1 Plus, the giant water bottle. Or, Stanley Cup!

Yes, the water bottle too. Looking forward to high school where kids can take backpacks around and not be forced to go their locker all day long. Much easier.

My kids had lockers in middle school and hated it — they were required to use them and not allowed to take their backpacks to class, but they only had 4 minutes between classes and the hallways were crammed. They were relieved not to use lockers in high school.

Plus, those stupid combination locks didn't always open, no matter how many times you painstakingly turned that little dial and pulled!

Sounds like a you problem. Used lockers all the time in middle and high school.
Didn’t have problems opening the lock. Random but handy skill, since my gym padlock has the same unlocking mechanism.

+1. Everyone used lockers in my middle and high school. It was a different time, but I don’t see how it has changed much except that they don’t usually need textbooks. I wouldn’t have wanted to carry my whole backpack around at lunch.

Back in my day it was common to go to your locker before classes started to unload the books needed after lunch, (and your coat/hat in winter)

Before the cafeteria you swapped morning materials for afternoon materials

At the end of the day you gathered all your books.

The lockers were centrally located in rows on a large open space near the cafeteria.

It was so convenient.

And Cooper now doesn’t use lockers (due to the renovation), which does not bother my son at all!

^^ It's this. My child plays 2 sports, soccer and basektball, and still won't use a locker because it's out of the way. He leaves his bags in the classroom of a teacher that is either his last class or nearest to where he has to go for soccer and basketball

It was a different time, for sure. In HS we had lockers on which you could use your own padlock. Everyone used the lockers but few people actually used locks.

What? I don’t get it.

I went to a FCPS middle and high school in the 90’s. We also had just a few minutes to get to our next class but we still used our lockers!

Some high schools are larger than others.

That's very kind of the teacher to allow that, but it's also an unfair liability for the teacher. If something disappears from the bag, I'm sure the teacher will be given hell or worse.

The size of the school argument is hilarious. Kids were using lockers in some of the largest schools in the state. No one said everyone has to use them or that you must go to your locker before each class. Lockers were always optional and available to help students when they need them and if they need them depending on the structure of their schedule and extra curricular activities.

I guess some schools adopted a no book bag policy but I guess that has to do with other reasons.

Get your kid a better pencil pouch that holds their headphones.

A binder, laptop, and pencil pouch is not a lot for kids to carry, unless they have a disability, of course.

Tissues, glasses, etc. pads/tampons? it’s a lot. They should be able to have a backpack to go around to their classes.

At longfellow at least they can use the smaller string bags which would probably work for that stuff.

This is the way at Key MS. They use lockers and can’t carry backpacks to class, but can have the small bags like you describe.

Because it makes hallways and classrooms too crowded. Also it's a hazard when people trip over them in a crowded classroom. Those were the reasons we were given.

That is very silly. No other FCPS middle school seems to have that rule.

According to this thread at least 2 do. *shrug*
