Are schools in FL terrible? Would you send your kids?

Yes and from memory, Florida spends average of 9k per student whereas it was closer to 20k per student in DC.

DC is even worse than that actually: https://www.census.gov/library/visualizations/2020/comm/school-system-spending.html

I would have a serious problem with sending my kids to FL schools. DeSantis removed AP African American History as an option. What kind of 1950 KKK crap is that? Also, the "don't say gay" thing? Nope.
Don't care about scores. FL is certainly "educating" its students, but the racism and homophobia is not what I'd want my kids to learn.

They have more traditional teaching methods which is a huge huge positive. On the negative side, they’re not allowed to teach black culture/history, which is so bizarre. Teachers worry they’ll get fired/sued - also strange.

Florida is a big place, OP. You can’t ask about the schools in the whole state or even in a region like just in northwest florida. Some schools are great and some are terrible and most are somewhere in between. Name the city or community you’re thinking of if you want actual information.

A huge part of me wants to have a simple and quiet lifestyle without all the hassles of everyday living in this area. When we got the house it was supposed to be for trips in the summer and retirement one day. However, I am contemplating on moving there permanently more and more in the next few years.

My main concern is the schools and the politics of course. With all that crazy Desantis is doing there it seems like a no brainer that I wouldn’t want my kids attending school there. Put me in my place DCUM, am I insane for even thinking this? Am I only going to raise mini - Desantis’?

Is “northwest” Florida what people are calling the panhandle these days? I grew up in Alabama and have never heard “northwest florida”. We didn’t even call it the “panhandle”- we called it a more derogatory term. The panhandle is pretty much the same as Alabama with more beaches. I would say it’s worse now because of desantis. I would never move there with kids. Even though the beaches are (in my opinion) among the best beaches in the world.

I also grew up in Alabama, and actually lived in Niceville for a couple of years recently (due to the military, not by choice). I agree 100% with this.

So you know of the offensive nickname of which I speak? I didn’t even realize it was offensive until many years and many moves later. Man, the floribama during spring break. Such memories.

No they are not. Do some research and stop quoting talking points.

? like this scientist's talking point:

https://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/environment/2022-10-19/florida-climate-scientist-hurricanes-intensifying-becoming-more-frequent

Hurricane Ian was among the strongest storms to ever make landfall in Florida and scientists say climate change contributed to that....

Yes, we have experienced intense hurricanes in the past, but these hurricanes are getting worse. And we're getting more of them, higher volume of Category Four, Category Five storms, which increases the likelihood that you're going to face dangerous conditions during your lifetime if you live in the state of Florida.

There is zero evidence to back up this “scientist” statement. Andrew was the most intense storm to hit Florida ever! Go look at the list of storms to hit Florida and you can see the FACTS not this theory.

Why did you put the scientist in quotes.

Daniel Gilford, Ph.D., is a meteorologist and atmospheric scientist with a decade of experience in climate science research.

What's your background in, and what are your qualifications in climatology? PhD is Alternate Facts?

This doesn't show what you think it does.

https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/subject/participating/pdfs/participating_10_4.pdf

Federal law specifies that NAEP is voluntary for every student, school, school district, and state. However, federal law also requires all states that receive Title I funds to participate in NAEP reading and mathematics assessments at fourth and eighth grades. Similarly, school districts that receive Title I funds and are selected for the NAEP sample are also required to participate in NAEP reading and mathematics assessments at fourth and eighth grades.

Other than Title 1 schools, which yes, would include Baltimore City schools, you don't have any idea which schools in MD, or FL for that matter, took part.

This is cherry picking data.

When I first saw the data, I was shocked, too, until I read that FAQ and realized that the data does not reflect the entire state.

You aren't "learning racism" because there is no AP African American History. I'm sure there are a lot of school districts all over the country that never even offered AP African History. Would you avoid all of those school districts? And when Desantis is gone, is it then OK to live in Florida? I get that it's an idiotic political stunt by Desantis, but it's not like it really has much impact on anyone.

Aside from the quality of the education, don't you think that you'll soon be as busy as you are now? I think you are just in a super busy stage of life and that will remain no matter where you live?

Op is baffling.

If she doesn’t have to commute to a job, why not build that quiet life where she lives now? I guess the crowds at Costco are probably more intense than racing senior citizens for carts at Publix, but I hardly see day to day what makes life busier or less so in either place.

Who the ever living F buys a SUMMER home in Florida?? Summer is the off season, as in you have to be off your rocker to be outside in that he11scape. The “beach” would be useless as the gulf would be as refreshing as a lobster pot.

I’m from Florida. Public schools are pretty weak compared to DMV schools. Lots of factors but the biggest would be peer effects and just general attitude of the population there. They just aren’t curious; just like OP you live in Florida seeking a cheaper simpler life, not to write the great American novel.
