Are you a fan of Freddie Mercury / Queen?

I just finished watching the two Bio. biography programs on Queen and Freddie Mercury, respectively.
I know of a few of their more well known songs (Killer Queen, We Are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Somebody to Love), but I didn't know much about the band's history or Freddie Mercury.

They weren't particularly huge in England, but found a bigger following in the US and toured a bunch here.
I was moved to learn that as a new band, they signed with a production company, not a music producer per se. As a result, much of their money was sucked up by a bunch of intermediaries and they were broke for a long time. Several of their performance choices were in an effort to get out from the production company's hold, including performing in South Africa in 1984 (during apartheid). They were labeled as supporters of apartheid for doing so, but it sounds like their really just wanted to perform where they could find fans and money.

And. Freddie himself was awfully talented, wrote and composed a lot of their music; he was self-conscious about playing the piano during shows because he was nervous about messing up.
We all know of his theatrics, but the biopic exposed a sensitive and vulnerable side to him. He was basically searching for love and validation his entire life.
In retrospect, many of Queen's songs now seem to sweet to me!

Sorry for the book report... I couldn't share this with DH, but thought DCUM might have an opinion.

LOVE Freddie Mercury. Best rockstar ever.

Yes, I love Queen. FM was brilliant, and an awesome front man. Too bad he had to leave us so soon.

Agree with pp's. He and they were extraordinary. Brian May has his PhD in astrophysics now!

OP get their greatest hits. My fave is Don't stop me now. There are so many great ones.

FM was definitely a gifted, complicated man.

I am a huge fan. DH jokes that I am an "Almost Queen" groupie --they are a Queen cover band that comes to the State Theater a couple of times a year. It looks like they are coming to Leesburg in June.

While it's not the real thing, it is a lot of fun.

Freddie Mercury had a four octave vocal range and was a musical genius.

His family was Zoroastrian. I wonder if he felt obligated to change his name or downplay his heritage. Kind of sad, that.

Crazy little thing called love was my wedding song.

Agree with everyone. I'm 50 now and I wish I appreciated him more when I was younger. Unbelievably talented, a musical genius. So sorry he died so young.

I saw Queen in concert in 1978.

I have converted my 8 yr old DS to be a Queen fan, too. It's kinda a funny but inappropriate to see my 8 yr old singing "fat bottom girls" Love FM. Amazing singer. Live performances that I have seen (on tv not live, boo hoo) and on recordings is the most amazing - no one compares live to him.

I went to high school in the 80's and Queen was one of the groups that everyone I knew listened to. Freddie...a true musical genius. Still love the music!

Love Freddie Mercury!
He was from Zanzibar.

Interestingly, he had a long term relationship with a woman before coming out and always refered to her as his best friend. He wrote love songs for her even after they weren't together romantically.

So talented, lost way too early.

Hard to believe he would be in his late 60's if he were still alive.
