If You Have a Dog That Barks Incessantly...

Anonymous
Ok, I need some honest feedback. We moved to a new house in June and the neighbors directly behind us have an extremely loud dog who barks INCESSANTLY whenever they let him outside. I know that during the day there is nothing I can do about this and believe me, if it was just a daytime thing I'd learn to live with it. But they let him out every single night sometime between 11 p.m and midnight, and every morning between 6-7 a.m. It is so disruptive to my sleep at night (I go to bed around 10 p.m.) and to my husband's (he sleeps until 7 normally) and it's making us nuts. We haven't met these neighbors yet. Would it be totally out of line for me to knock on their door tomorrow morning and ask if they can be a little more considerate? Or is this just the bad luck of the draw? In our old neighborhood we never had to deal with this, and we lived in that house for 12 years. We had a dog but he only barked when someone came to the door and was not a barker outside at all. Help!!!!

Request a bark collar.

They shouldn't let him out in the yard at that hour. They should put him on a leash and walk him in their yard. That is WAY TOO LATE for barking. (Same goes for before 7).

They need to walk their dog more - clearly the beast is bored in the yard and not getting enough exercise. However, you can't control that. What you are stuck with is that the pet owners are inconsiderate people.

As for PP: I would tell you precisely where to shove that bark collar if you came over and made that request. I would be very polite and work with you if you came over and initiated a real conversation.

Nothing you can really do.

Sorry. Nothing you can do.

I hear you. My neighbor's dog is the same way. I've gotten used to it.

You can call the police if your town/county has a noise ordinance (this applies to ongoing noise during the day, too, and you can report animals left outside when owners aren't home). You can record (via writing or an actual audio recording) the barking for two weeks and then file a nuisance complaint with animal control (to do this you also need to contact them at least once and ask them to address the barking). You can yell out your window like a crazy person "bring in your fucking dog, asshole!"

I can tell you from experience, nothing but multiple calls, visits from the police, and letters or visits from animal control is going to get through to them. Even then, you have an 80/20 chance that they are just complete entitled assfucks or they wouldn't be treating their animal or their neighbors this way in the first place.

Ours barks on the leash also because of wildlife in the yard. We have a deer problem so if you are in DC near Rock creek park that could be one of the issues.

We once lived in a townhouse and people in the area had a bunch of little yappers that never stopped barking on their walks. Those things barked at everything on the paths, playgrounds, open areas. If that neighbor has similar dogs you have to talk to them. The dog I had at the time barked when there was something to bark at. A few times she was barking and I saw nothing in the little attached house yard.

Turned out to be rats by the back fence line.
