| Apparently, AAP math is one grade ahead. If gen ed is learning multiplication in 3rd grade, do the 3rd graders in AAP also study this or are they expected to know this? Just wondering how this works out. |
| I think they don't actually end up a grade ahead until 5th grade, when they take the 6th grade SOL. My child studied multiplication in 3rd grade AAP. |
| They learn/practice multiplication the summer before AAP 3rd. |
Not all schools require that. My child is at Haycock and they were not told they needed to learn it before 3rd. Also, even if they do, a lot of kids didn't seem to remember it. Many kids had a hard time with the timed tests. |
| The FFX County AAP programs cover all the materials the other students do plus more. So in 3rd grade, they will advance through 3rd grade math quickly (for a few months) and start 4th grade math. In 4th grade, they will finish 4th grade math and get a good part into 5th. In 5th they pretty much catch up to complete 5th and 6th. In 6th they do prealgebra type math, with the hopes of placement in Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade (usually a 9th grade) course ... So they cover all the material, just faster. |
| WHen my DCs took the accelaerated math in ES, it gradually worked them up to be 2 years ahead in math. So, by 7th grade they were ready from Algebra I. |
| My 3rd grader (in AAP) is finishing up her multiplication tables. In talking with other parents it sounds like some are just learning and others have them pretty much mastered. |
| The way it was explained to us is that they move quickly through the grade level math and move into the next year level math. This occurs every year of ES. I see in the work that comes home that gong to the next grade level subject that it occurs by unit...for example they just did patterns and variables and covered both 4th and 5th grade concepts in this area. |
Algebra 1 is now widely considered an 8th grade course. I would estimate that about half the kids in my dc's 6th grade AAP center cohort qualified for Algebra in 7th. |
| In the Longfellow district of the AAP kids coming in, the majority of them qualify for Algebra I Honors ... an Honors, more accelerated version of Algebra I (counts for HS GPA with a 0.50 bump up because it is considered a high school honors course) ... in 7th grade. |
Really? I had heard that the percentage dropped remarkably this school year due to not as many students scoring pass advanced on the 7th grade math SOL. |
| 22:09 here -- to clarify about the "remarkably" comment -- it used to be about 3/4 of 6th graders in advanced math would score pass advanced on the 7th grade math SOL but now it's closer to 1/3 to 1/2 across the county. |
This reads the same as differentiated math offered in Gen Ed. |
Are you saying a summer program is offered? |
I definitely wouldn't say "the majority." At Haycock, only 57% of the AAP 6th graders received pass advanced on the 7th grade math SOL, and of those, there were more who didn't qualify on the IAAT. We were really surprised how few of the kids dc knew from ES are taking Algebra. |
