I forgot to add:
7th graders in FCPS are not permitted to take regular Algebra. They all have to take Algebra 1 honors. There is no special qualification, like you are implying.

My son's AAP math has not showed much difference from regular classroom yet. He did 4th grade place values last year (in second grade) and now they did the same thing in AAP 3rd grade. Last year they did addition to one million; now they are working on the same stuff. Not sure when we will see the difference...I am not complaining here. It is okay to have repetition and review and a solid foundation is great. I am just curious when the acceleration will begin

5th grade, in my experience.

Are you saying a summer program is offered?

No. You get flash cards for your kid and do it the old-fashioned way.

My son is in 4th grade AAP at Belvedere. They STARTED the school year with the 5th grade curriculum. 3rd grade covered 3rd and 4th grade math. In 5th grade they cover 6th grade math.

Our school did 10+12 kind of addition in first grade. Second grade they started with 56+78 kind of problems, worked alot on 356+455 kind of questions, and ended with two worksheets with total of 12 questions (not sure 12 or 8) 456783+446898 kind of questions. This year in 3rd grade AAP, the questions are kind of like 7899 + 5488; 1.59+2.52. They moved on to three digit subtraction now. No multiplication yet.

BTW, the math is easy and quick. The challenge comes from social studies for my son- government, maps etc. Are those AAP specific or SOL required? For government, they discussed the three divisions, what kind of democracy, state government, legislative stuff. For maps they are working on neighboring states, continents and oceans, rivers and mountains in US, and some facts of VA. My son has a hard time remembering all the facts.
I read a post here saying a school is using wordly-wise. Our school has not started that yet and not sure if they will use the wordly-wise.

I definitely wouldn't say "the majority." At Haycock, only 57% of the AAP 6th graders received pass advanced on the 7th grade math SOL, and of those, there were more who didn't qualify on the IAAT. We were really surprised how few of the kids dc knew from ES are taking Algebra.

This is not only occurring at Haycock but at AAP Center ESs throughout the county due to the newer 7th grade math SOL.

I just noticed today that the HW book my DC brings home twice a week is a 4th grade book. I scanned through and some pages look pretty challenging.

Do kids finally get workbooks in 3rd grade? Is this for both AAP and gen ed? Very excited to get away from ditto sheets every day.

Why does it matter if the worksheets are bound in a book or sent home as individual sheets? It's still the same work, isn't it?
