Why do you suppose that "Gone with the Wind" is such a popular book/movie--given how controversial it is to some?
Do you suppose that, in a sense, many of us are still nostalgic for a simpler, carefree era? Do you think that some are sympathetic toward the Southern cause? |
| OP, why does that era seem simpler and carefree to you? Strikes me that it might have been simple but certainly not carefree! |
|
I love the movie.
It was simpler and carefree for the SLAVEHOLDERS alright. Are people really this naive? LOL. We've been over this before. |

|
| Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. |
|
No, once the slaveholders started fighting a war and then tried to survive in the postwar environment, their lives were certainly not carefree. As I recall that was half the plot - Scarlet trying to figure out how to survive, when even as a white woman, she had little autonomy and control over her life. As I recall that was a pretty interesting part of the plotline for me as a young person.
Not justifying slaveholding or any romantic notions about the Confederacy -- Scarlet and company deserved to struggle! -- just quibbling a bit with OP about how she/he characterized the plot. |
| Fiddle-dee-dee. |
| It portrays a strong feminist character. |
| Well written book. Books are neither moral nor immoral but poorly or well written. |
+1. Beautiful response, just beautiful.
|
yeah, didn't Sherman come marching through their town and trash it? |
| Do you think people who enjoy Breaking Bad are sympathetic to violent drug dealers? |
The simple, carefree era of southern slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Not to mention the simple, carefree era of the Great Depression! Ah, good times. OP, haven't you already had a thread about this? |
+1. My favorite novel since I was 12, I've read it probably 20 times. You do have to look past the racism. I just take it as a reflection of what attitudes were at the time. If you have critical thinking skills, this is not difficult. |
| Because Kenya Moore said she was Gone with the Wind fabulous. Then the young bucks had to find out what Gone with the Wind was. |
