Child got left out of class picture

I mean, I know exactly what day my kid gets services. And I also know when picture day is. Because about a million reminders come home via payment form, Teacher News, and PTA email. So if picture day was on the same day as speech, I would have called the school and made sure I knew when the two things were happening because teachers have 25 kids to worry about and I only have 1. Mom could have ensured smooth sailing on this. I do also agree the teacher was lame not to count heads and from that standpoint, blameworthy since the student was not absent.

It having happened, I would ask them to fix it.

Wow, I think I'm a pretty diligent mom, but it would never occur to me to micro manage the teacher to the point that I have to remind her that my kid gets pull out services and not to do the class photo at that same time. I would expect a teacher to know her own business, and I would imagine that pull out services and full class activities are par for the course in school. Of course I understand teachers make mistakes and have a lot on their plate, and reminders never hurt. But no I don't think the mom bears responsibility. At all.

But now that it has, asking the photographer to bring all their equipment back to the school to retake one picture is not a reasonable request. It's also probably $$$--the schools get a bulk deal for one day of processing classes through like a machine but a special session for just one class is something else. Who is going to pay for this?

The school is going to pay for it.

Frankly, this isn't an "accident". This is what happens when schools don't think of their classes as inclusive communities. The school is responsible for fixing it. Sadly, if it doesn't cost them something, whether it's effort or money, then they aren't going to change what happened.

This. The class picture isn't a big deal, but the teacher not considering your child enough of a member of the community to fail to notice her absence is a very big deal.

Oh, come on. It's not like she was left to fend for herself on a field trip. You're being ridiculous.

If they can't do a retake, can you ask the photo company to photoshop him in? We've had ours do that before.

But if you want to make this your hill to die on, you can.

THIS is a great idea. Ask for an informal pic of the whole class and frame that one for your house.

Fine. Think that. But if your kid is at risk of being left out of the pic and you could do something small (a phone call) to prevent it, why wouldn't you? It is an extra precaution. The teacher doesn't care. This photo is immaterial to the teacher. But YOU do, because YOU are the family with the left out kid and nothing to put in the memory album.

I have a kid who missed the school pictures one year because of a pulll-out. This is just not a big deal. Have any of you ever been at a school during class picture day? It's a madhouse. Kids everywhere, shuffling in and out quickly, trying to keep the little ones from wrestling too much in line and messing up their nice clothes. The picture isn't redone. They don't do Photoshop. There are usually kids who miss.

If it really bothers you, ask the teacher send an email to the class saying she is going to take a group photo of the class for the kids because some kids missed, Larla's mom will take the picture if you want copies, and please contact the teacher if you don't want your child in the photo, and photo will be taken in accord with the school photo policy, assuming they have one.

This happened to my kid who isn't SN.

He missed two days of school and upon his return, the teacher sent him to the library to work on some missed work and help the librarian while the rest of the class took a test. The teacher 100% forgot that she'd sent him out of the classroom and after the test, the class went down for the class picture and then to lunch. He was forgotten for the picture and 90% of lunch. It wasn't until he mentioned being hungry that the librarian noticed the time and said they were going to walk down to his classroom. His teacher was there and felt terrible. I got an email and then later a phone call to explain what happened. And even though it was caught that same day before the school day even ended, they couldn't do a retake. I don't remember the exact reason given, but something about allotted photographer time springs to mind. I highly doubt they'll go back and redo it now that it's days later.

I would see if they company would photoshop her in.

Most schools offer retakes for individual students and have the days set up in advance. It is not going to cost the school extra. The $$$ comes from the picture packages that are purchased.

Right - and then another kid who is absent that day will miss the picture, and his parents will (rightfully) complain that he was there on picture day, and why on earth should he not be in the picture?

??? Are people posting here who have no experience with class pictures? There will be proofs of all of them. Order the one you like best. Personally, I choose the one where my kid has his eyes open and looks the least goofy. I don't give a crap which one the other parents choose.

They offer INDIVIDUAL retakes for a class picture? This makes no sense.

Sigh. The word "individual" means one person. The photographer plans to return anyway to take pictures of the individual students who missed picture day. During that visit he or she can also retake photos of entire classes if necessary.

It's just not that complicated.

Unfortunately the school photos get scheduled and it's really hard to adjust the timeframes. They can't do anything about it when a kid is out sick, pulled out for another class, etc. Don't take it personally.

BS. A kid being absent because of illness is not within their control. A kid absent because the teacher neglected to account for him is completely different. I'd take it personally.

OP is upset her kid missed the picture.

Other parents would be furious because the specialized instruction was missed.

School can't win.

I would hold them accountable. I have two NT kids and one SN child and it's so much more important for my SN child to be in those photos IMO. One year one of my NT children missed the class picture due to a pullout. It was not a big deal for him but for a child who's already used to being marginalized and looked down on these types of things take on a bigger significance.

OP's kid didn't miss her individual school photo (well, maybe she did, but that isn't the issue, and there are always reshoots of them). She missed the *class picture* - the picture of the entire class. Which is why, not coincidentally, the title of the post is "Child got left out of class picture."

So, I guess, the question is, do *you* actually have kids, or are you just a dumbass?
