Should a police officer be allowed in a college class if wearing a uniform?

On principle, I believe that outside of the line of duty, one should not be in uniform or scrubs or professional garb of any kind. That also means leaving guns at home.

I am so sick of this argument. Needing or wanting a police officer in one situation does not mean they get carte blanche to be murderers and other situations. I need my priest for Spiritual reasons. However, my need for his Counseling doesn't negate the fact that he shouldn't be molesting children.

I don't ignore or excuse the food companies for sickening people with E.coli just because I need food. You need to stop expecting so little of police. Or saying they can basically get away with anything and people shouldn't have a bad opinion of them because we need them on some occasions. It's a fucking stupid argument

I teach on a college campus and I see all sorts of uniforms day in and day out. I know that some of these people are in fact armed. I can accept that. I don't think the general College populace needs to be armed though. I've seen too many situations that could have escalated way further in the presence of a firearm

Please. I somehow doubt the veracity of exactly what this dude said on his Facebook page. I am the pp who teaches on campus. And you won't believe the way stories are wildly spun by students. They have quite a different view of reality than people around them generally sometimes

Nothing. And that is probably not the issue. The student was probably more concerned about a possible gun than uniform. That is why the professor called campus security to determine what the gun policy on campus was for law enforcement officers.

This guy obviously has a complex. After all he is a white conservative male who is apparently experienced a ton of prejudice at Loyola. My eyes are rolling so hard I can't even take it.

I disagree! My son could very well stop a school shooting. He is a battle trained Army Airborne Ranger and Expert Marksman. He is calm and cool. Nothing rattles him. He has a conceal carry with special permission from his school to carry on campus. You want him to have a gun on campus.

Wy do you think they are liberal? There are plenty of conservative rich kids who have never been in a room with a police officer or a solider. I know, I have taught them. They need to learn how to be around regular middle class people who have jobs which might involve law enforcement.

I'm a very liberal Dem. I want police officers, FBI Agents, trained former military, retired cops, etc. to conceal carry any damn time they choose. And thank God, the majority of Americans feel the same. I want strict background checks. But I want the good guys to have weapons.

You know what? I'm pretty anti-gun. I won't let my kids play with guns, will not have even toy guys in the house.

And yet, my beef with concealed weapons and licenses is with the law and I work within the system to change the law. As long as the law is as it currently stands, I respect my fellow citizens right to carry with a legal license as long as the law is as it currently reads. I may be uncomfortable, but I will respect other citizens rights to carry weapons even while I fight the law that allows them to do so. However, even if the citizens' right to carry were overturned, I respectfully want all LEO to carry weapons because it is their job and they are trained to carry and use those weapons in protecting the citizens. Yes, there are abuses by some bigoted police officers, but LEO do far more good with weapons than they do harm. We will have a far greater impact on our society by restricting guns from the Dylan Roofs, Adam Lanzas, Eric Harrises, Dylan Klebolds, and James Holmes.

So, I have no objection to an officer in uniform being armed while in public, including attending a college lecture. Frankly, I believe in the policy that an officer should be armed whenever in uniform. People have a right to expect a uniformed police officer to be able to execute his job even when not on duty and being armed is a part of that duty. Frankly, tragedies like the Oregon community college shooting might have avoided loss of life if an armed police officer were in the classroom when the shooter arrived.

I'll admit that I'm pretty far left on the conservative-liberal continuum. I am a 50+ white woman who is the mother of 5 children, 3 of whom are AA, and I am attending graduate school for yet another graduate degree. It would not phase me at all if I was in a class and a fellow student was wearing a police officer uniform and carrying a firearm. I am astounded that anyone would think that it is not legal for a uniformed police officer to carry a firearm on a college campus. And I am completely gobsmacked that anyone would be alarmed by attending a class attended by a uniformed police officer.

Not wanting anyone with a gun (no matter how well trained they may be) in a classroom has nothing to do with my intelligence. That you are insulting other people because they see something differently than you does speak to yours though.
