Also, UMD has a prettier campus. College Park has improved immensely, and it’s right outside DC.

That tiki torch thing was awful.

Having moved to the DMV in the last few years from CA, I had the same impression of Charlottesville. The 2017 events were unfortunate and have had a lasting impact on the outside view of the area. It is one of those towns you now want to add an explanatory sentence to if that is where you are from.

I hate MD. Grew up in VA. We have so many more options for all types and majors and school sizes.

I'd pick UVA, WM, VT and JMU over UMD.

^ My kid didn't even apply to UMD. Zero interest.

Got into UVA and WM and now waiting to hear back from some top 10, 20 schools.

My kid had zero interest in VA schools. Too southern aka racist.

As a NOVA HS grad and son of JMU alum, my kid chose UMD over WM and didn't bother applying to Tech. He was WL at UVA.

Well, that's certainly an ignorant statement

You think Nova is "too southern and racist"? That's where the bulk of the UVA students come from. Then there is the very large portion of OOS and international students. Yeah, right, they're all "too southern and racist" too. Talk about a bigoted viewpoint!

My kid didn't care about VA at all. Applied to UMD and other OOS like Mich. VA schools weren't even on their radar.

So, really, there are both sides.

You do know that not everyone is an engineering major?

They are also wrong. It's 85K for engineering -- they just want to pick on UVA. https://sfs.virginia.edu/estimated-undergraduate-cost-attendance-2023-2024

+1 better internship opportunities through the year since it's so close to major metro areas.

yes, I know UVA students get SUMMER internships. But, being so far from metro areas, it would be more difficult to find internships year round. Yes, there are virtual ones, but more and more companies are going hybrid/in person.

a few years ago is not "ancient".

People outside this area do see VA as too southern. They don't care if you are from NoVa or RoVa. Having lived here now for 10 years, I see that MoCo is no different to FFX, however, coming from CA, I did initially see VA as too southern. It's a mental block.

Is this sarcasm? You are going to quibble about $5k when the annual coa is $85K? Might as well be $90K.

OP, what is your kid's intended major. That matters a lot.

+1. they also cherry picked engineering. OOS for UVA's college of Arts & Sciences, UVA's largest school, is $75K, all in. https://sfs.virginia.edu/estimated-undergraduate-cost-attendance-2023-2024
