Franklin & Marshall College - whats the hype?

Anonymous
I've heard that student happiness and campus culture is lacking at F&M, but I have nothing concrete to back this up. Worth looking into.

Dickinson > F&M > Gettysburg

Not to be overly picky, but I think this is the line up for these schools. Gettysburg is just a slight notch below the other two.

Dickinson? LOL.

No.

Curious why you and the PP have F&M ranked below either of these schools. Out of the three, it is the most selective and has the highest graduation rate, freshman retention rate and test score midranges. What am I missing that makes Dickinson better? That it's mentioned more in this forum (usually in discussions about safety schools)?

Agreed that F&M is the top of those three.

Was the first year and they are piloting it. Per someone at the school who we spoke to about it.

My DC ended up applying ED elsewhere and was accepted but we really liked F&M. I don’t think there’s much hype about it though.

F&M seemed like a great SLAC, easy to get to from the DMV, Lancaster has enough going on to be interesting, kids seemed pretty studious.

F&M > Gettysburg > Dickinson

Gettysburg has slipped in the rankings for some reason, probably the Pell Grant bull crap, but it still has slightly better stats than Dickinson and sends way more bros to The Street.

F&M is a half-step up from the other two. Kind of a midpoint between Bucknell/Lafayette/Lehigh and Gettysburg/Dickinson.

All fine choices for the right kid.

I remember reading threads on this site last year that their kids surprisingly got merit at F&M. It definitely wasn’t as much as $30k, but they started changing last year.

My student was offered $35,000 per year at F&M this year. That’s huge and definitely makes us consider it a top contender. We are still waiting on some other decisions but that level of merit aid definitely has the potential to change minds.

Why are we discussing no-name schools?

My son is there as a freshman and is happy. The workload is high and he is studying a lot but finds time for activities. The kids seem smart. We’re pleased with it.

Because someone started a thread about it, geed. Why did you click on it if you're not interested in the topic?

Even on DCUM not every kid goes to HYPS.

We visited not long ago. Everyone we met was very nice. I know a couple of grads and they are fantastic. But DC is no longer interested in applying - in her words "it seemed dead and miserable."
