Does anyone actually work 80 hours a week?

DH is a doctor in a hospital based practice. Definitely worked 80 hours weeks in residency, with a good amount frequently. Now, he often works around 72 hours a week (2 24 hour shifts plus 2 12 hour) in a 7 day period. Sometimes more or with a different configuration . Not ideal but they are short staffed.

Dh is a doctor and residency was easily 80-100 hours. It was ridiculous. The very people who shouldn’t be sleep deprived…

I worked these hours when I ran a business. I didn't want my employees stuck waiting on me, so I'd work on revieiwing their work and giving feedback as quickly as possible. The new owners put in a layer of middle management which is what I should have done.

I worked those hours consistently when a consultant and had to travel abroad frequently.

Many many physicians do this. Their work is their life, even if they have a family. They work long hours, weekends, ect

I work in cybersecurity operation. I work 13 hours from Sunday to Tuesday with job #1 and Wednesday to Friday with job #2. Been at it for almost five years now. It sucks but I am almost done with my mortgage payment so I will be back to one job in the next few months.

Even in the shower, you can't stop trying to figure out the answers to issues. Some people only stop working when they are asleep.

Its a big part of why kids and spouses complain that "even when you are here, you aren't here."

This isn’t what Op is talking about. If this is what people call 80 hours, then it is BS

I think OP's point was that it seems like at least some of the people claiming to work 80 hours a week are including things like this because it's not sustainable for most people.

I definitely know one person who counted it like this ("my brain never turns off and I'm always thinking about work" so a 2 hour lunch break including gym time was counted in that 12 hours a day). I considered it BS too.

I’ve read time management books by Laura Vanderkam and when she has people log every hour of what they’re doing, frequently it only works out to a max of like 65 hours a week of work. The rest is people eating a work dinner or taking a break or a nap recovering from that level of work. Also it’s not sustainable years on end.

People love to brag about their hours, but I just take everything people say with a grain of salt.

This isn't possible for a doctor or lawyer. The hours you work are billed or scheduled.

This is OP! This is actually what prompted me to ask this - LV’s work!

I see people frequently posting about this with regard to law firm associates and management consultants, usually in the context of how much their husbands work. I didn’t even think of the doctor example.
