I don't know what to do -- i have posted here before about this but still have not found a solution. Hoping someone can help me this time.
I have 2 beagles -- one is OBSESSED with eating poop. We have a fenced in yard -- I am 8 months pregnant with a toddler and can't always walk them, so I let them out in the yard. 80% of the time, I can go out with them and stalk my one beagle who eats poop and follow him around. But that other 20% of the time, I have to let them out on their own in the yard b/c my toddler is screaming, or I am on a work call, etc. This is usually when he eats a poop -- that for SOME REASON I did not see 2 hours before when I did a round of the backyard to pick up poops. He literally is able to find a poop in .2 seconds and eat it even if I have searched the yard that morning and thought it was clean. Walks are super stressful as well b/c he snaps up random poops he finds and eats them before I can even see them in the grass. I have gotten to the point where i am constantly tugging him and not letting him even sniff for a second b/c I am worried there is a poop that I can't see. I have tried switching foods, (from Natural Balance to Wellness, all premium foods), tried pumpkin and pineapple in his food, I have tried FORBID powder from the vet, etc. NOTHING WORKS. Please tell me there is a miracle out there that will stop this disgusting habit!!! To top it off, he is a licker and often licks my toddler. He is on parasite meds and up to date on his shots. |
| Look on the positive side, less poop for you to scoop! But seriously, the reason dogs eat their own or another dog's feces is there is too much undigested matter in the poop. You need to feed the dogs better food that will digest fully. I recommend Natural Balance. I saw a huge decrease in poop eating of my dog. But, some dogs just like to eat poop, and they are not particular as to who's poop it is. |
| ^^^and since I read your post again and saw you already changed food...... you just have a poop eater. |
| How old is your dog? Sometimes they outgrow this behavior if they are puppies. They lick their butts, so they are going to have dirty mouths no matter what. I would not let my dog lick my baby. |
| You have a beagle. End of story. |
This is the problem. ^^^ Unless you are willing to do what it takes to change this lifestyle, nothing will change. |

My dog is 10 years old and he has always eaten poop on occasion but recently it has become an OBSESSION to the point where I have trouble walking him, etc without him snapping up a poop that someone has left in the grass.
He gets really good quality food and I even give him veggies from time to time. Not sure what caused the occasional poop eating to an obsession where he actually seems to be hunting out poops on our walks and in the backyard. |
This. Frickin' beagles, man. |
Try serving it in his bowl

| GOD DAMN. This has to be one of the worst things about dog ownership. My dog has a cat poop fetish. And she gets diarrhea afterwords. She can hunt it down in a flash. JR terrier. The smell on her breath is so bad that I want to blast her in the mouth with the garden hose. And sometimes I do--even in the winter. Frickin' dog. |
Hahahahahaha. I see I'm not the only sick bastard here. Cause I get so mad, that sometimes I think: fine--it's shit for dinner then. There you go Fluffy! What? Not so happy about eating it now, are you! |
| I have a poop-eating puggle (thanks, beagle mom!). There is no magic cure. You HAVE to go out with him every time he might poop. And truly, it's not that hard. My dog poops twice a day -- first thing in the morning, last thing before bed. We watch him from the window while he pees the other times, ready to spring into action with a baggie if there's a surprise poo. Maybe it's because we're used to it, but I can't imagine NOT doing this and just having random shit piles all over the backyard. Icky. |
Yes, I hate poop mouth! I don't think there is anything you can do other than keep the poop picked up. Wait until you are potty training your kids. Dogs love some poopy underwear. There is nothing quite like a good ASS FEAST. |
| OP here, so does anyone have any solutions? Is there anything I can put in the food to prevent this? Or something I can do to stop it? I have 2 dogs -- the one who eats poop actually poops 4 times a day and the other poops 2 times a day. I always clean up but sometimes I am picking up one poop and the other dog poops while I am on one side of the yard picking up one poop and I miss it! They are speed poopers to top it off! |
| I think you need to ask yourself why you are "at your wit's end" with something that is merely a dog's bad habit. Your reaction is a little extreme. |
