Rant: Bad drivers, huge SUVs, and parking

If it takes you more than a three point turn to park your ridiculously huge SUV:

a) Get a smaller car,
b) improve your driving skills,
and c) for the love of god stop with the stupid back-in parking already.

Thank you. That is all.

There was a very long and contentious thread recently devoted to debate on back-in parking (not just of SUVs but any vehicles and that is where this thread is already heading too).

Seriously no need to rehash that whole discussion.

But folks with monster SUVs, trucks, etc. should learn to park FAR AWAY in sections of lots or garages where they are not squeezing in between parked cars, or parking so that they hog the lines on one or both sides and normal humans cannot open their doors. I think people with these vehicles often have no idea at all how much room the vehicle takes up. Most parking spaces were never intended for vehicles this wide or long.

Had to climb in through my passenger door the other day because a honking huge pickup was so close, and at just enough of an angle in the space next to me, that I could not even get to the driver's side of my car, much less open the door.

If the weather is halfway decent and you're not qualified for a handicapped space and you drive these big vehicles, park away from humanity, parking hogs. Walk a little extra to your destination.

Regarding SUVs, it is much easier to back into a space than to drive in forward.

Then why does it regularly take people five minutes to do?

5 minutes? That's super fast for the majority of SUV drivers.

There is no need to back into suburban parking lots and parking garages; there are even signs in some of the garages warning drivers to not back in, I've seen drivers back-in right in front of these signs.

Not sure why backing in is a "thing" here, I've lived around large SUVs and pickup trucks my whole life before moving here, and most people did not back in and did not kill anyone while pulling out.

There’s a bunch of ex-military and NatSec dorks in our region. Police and military are taught to park in backwards so a fleet of vehicles can deploy quickly in an emergency.

It’s completely unnecessary for any civilians (or off-duty security/IC) to do this in a CostCo on a Saturday afternoon.

Yes, we have our fair share of those types. But we also have more than our fair share of people who will speed around you while you’re trying to back out rather than stopping and letting you finish, so it’s still safer to back in sometimes. I personally don’t go to Costco on Saturdays for this very reason but some people are braver than I am.
