Griselda - Netflix show with Sofía Vergara

I don’t understand what the makeup artists were doing with SV’s eyebrows. You could see the latex and weird “laminated”-style brows pasted on top. Unless that is actually what GB’s brows looked like, and it wasn’t, I really don’t get what they were doing.

Were they trying to make her look different? Or less beautiful?

Honestly, I just thought, “Wow…she hasn’t aged well.” But then I googled Griselda and discovered the real person wasn’t attractive so perhaps they wanted to downplay her looks.

Call me crazy but I thought the point of makeup in a role was to try to make the actor look like the person they’re playing.

Sure…but nobody knows what the real Griselda looked like…she isn’t a household name.

And all they really did to Vergara was give her a hairstyle (wig?) that looks spot on for the time period and pack on very heavy makeup. Right? She isn’t wearing prosthetics, is she? She’s just not all contoured up like a Kardashian.

I thought it was Catherine Zeta Jones at first. I am not a fan of actors using prosthetics at all. It's lazy, designed to make you forget who they are as opposed to them doing that through their acting.

She might not be a household name like Pablo Escobar, but I'd think the majority of people have heard of Griselda Blanco and anyone can find out what she looked like in five seconds.

There were indeed prosthetics, including a prosthetic nose. Also large fake yellow buck teeth. And indeed a wig. And those bizarre brows.

Vergara has been on the talk show circuit going on about her hours in the makeup chair, and there's a "trending" story about her telling Kelly Clarkson to shut up about it not being much of a transformation.

I'd never seen Vergara in anything before and I think had only seen a few photos of her on here, but it was very obvious to me watching the series that the transformation was extensive. My confusion is just that it was a really, really bad one, and she ended up looking nothing like Griselda Blanco.

I thought SV was really great in this and I enjoyed it (much as you can enjoy such a dark tale).

I did say to my husband that this movie, and some other narco shows, really do depict south Americans as kind of gross, seedy, criminal . . . among other things. But, maybe that is just me. The So Americans I know do not fit this bill.

I'm interested in the real story about Griselda so thanks for the Cocaine Cowboys rec. I'll check that out. I did have to google Griselda to see if she was real (as I was not familiar with her). And she is (obv) and SV did this lady a favor in the looks department. I guess that is why her make up was caked on so badly, to make her look worse.

You're kidding right? I googled her before I even watched the first episode.

I mean, of course shows about drug cartels are going to depict people in them as gross seedy criminals. There are tons of shows about South Americans that have nothing to do with the drug business and there are shows about gross seedy criminals all over the world.

The thing is, it’s not just the cartel people portrayed that way in these cartel shows . Not sure why you’re being so defensive about that.

Can you give an example of this from Griselda? I’m not defensive, I honestly don’t know what you’re referring to.

Gosh you would think with all that money in Miami you'd get some plastic surgery. I mean, daymn.

This was a passion project for Vergara, and also has a personal connection. Her younger brother struggled with drug addiction for a long time and was deported back to Colombia from the US after multiple convictions.

SV's makeup was unnecessary and distracting. It didn't make her look any closer to Griselda. I wish there were more young pics of Griselda bc I bet she was better looking in her prime.

Her mug shot is giving grandfather from King of the Hill.

She’s not trying to look like Griselda. She’s trying to not look like herself in order to pull off the dramatic role. She purposely wanted her eyebrows to not be thick as it’s a signature of her looks. Sheks explained this in multiple interviews.
