I'm surprised at how many in this thread are ok with their kids purchasing and using fake IDs illegally.
We learned our DC had one and we confiscated it. We told him that if we learned that he got another, we would remove his access to the car and limit his socializing outside the house. |
My college freshman has one. I found out about it last year. Parenting them through this stuff is so tricky. My parents were very strict so I just lied about everything and that's not the dynamic I want to create with my kids. We've decided our primary goal is to keep the lines of communication open. We're able to counsel and share our values in an organic way because they talk to us. We can also share our boundaries/lines in the sand, because they do exists. We're not interested in our kids being popular or any crap like that, we're invested in them learning to make sound decision while trying to keep them safe. |
My 15 year old makes 6 figures. |
How do DC private school and UMC suburban public school kids (that drive BMWs, Range Rovers, etc.) have money for clubs? It's a mystery. |
| My college kid has more money than I do. He has two summer jobs. |
It’s a big world out there. They aren’t the only ones who go out. Teens have money because they have no bills to pay. |
| The preferred term is "undocumented supplicant". |
Ehh, my kids didn't get them until college so I wasn't really worried about it. I probably would have had a different attitude if I found out they had one in HS. |
Correct. You can pretty much kill someone in DC and get off unscathed. The MPD is not criminalizing fake IDs. |

My highschoolers (age 17) have them. I think they're funny as my son's has him as a 22 year old resident of rural North Carolina.
The kids know the bars that will take them. To me it's not the cross to die on as a parent. He rarely drinks (maybe once a month?), is a great student, active in church and nice to his grandparents. I am not going to go ballistic over a fake ID. We care the most about maintaining a relationship and open conversation with our kids. |
They work because there are plenty of businesses who know very well they are fake and happily accept the cash and move on. The kids know where to go. |
I would bet that your kid is a decent person but church and grades aren’t indicators of that. You know him well enough to make your decisions. No one should judge. |
Let them buy it. Then keep looking for it. After you find it trash and keep quiet. Let them buy another one and do the same. I did this with all of mine who decided to break the law. No fighting and my house my rules. |
| I would not be OK with it at 16. I would take it away and let them know what the consequences will be if it happens again. |
Really so only some laws pertain to your kid? You are an idiot and a sucky parent. Big whoop your kid is active in church. Not something that makes a good human given most pedos are religious clergy. And omg how about hypocritical much. |
