Academy Awards 2024

I see every movie that comes out in the theater. I am glad and surprised Emma Stone won since the tide was against her. Lily Gladstone seems absolutely charming, but her voice was totally monotone throughout Killers OTFM

It's considered one of the best films yet made in this century and I'm still angry that the cast and crew didn't get their moment in the sun because of the cockup with the envelopes at the Oscars that year.

It's a brilliant film, full of brilliant performances.

And yes, I'm going there - Oscars so white 2024. Again.

25% of the acting winners weren't white, and 50% of the writing winners weren't white.

Yup - two black people took home Oscars and a group of Asians did. And all the rest where white, white, white.

So what? You’re petty.

You’re in denial.

Your whining would be better received if you pointed out who was more deserving instead of mindlessly tallying up people of color. I really don’t think Lily Gladstone or Jeffrey Wright were that great in their roles.

Just keep on yapping. That bubble serves you well.

I can't believe Past Lives didn't get recognized. The acting and story were much better than others nominated. I have no issue with Emma Stone winning. That movie wasn't for me, but it sounds like the role was unique. I can see why she'd win.

I'm glad American Fiction won something.

I lovedddd Past Lives. It was my favorite movie last year. I thought that it deserved a director nom, too.

If the are going to have 5+ noms for best pic then there should be that many best director noms

This - this made me cringe.

Also, did anyone else see the weird clip of Emily Blunt pawing all over Cillian Murphy after he won? She jumped right in front of his wife to hug him and couldn’t stop touching him - gave me the ick.

This awards season has really made me dislike her. She seems so fake.

He kissed and hugged his wife first? Then Emily hugged him cause she was sitting in front of him. And then Robert Downey Jr. hugged him because he was sitting in front of her. Just not seeing that as "pawing" etc.

Gladstone gave a more subtle and restrained performance, and the academy members often vote for bigger, showier performances like Stone's instead. In fact, the same thing happened when Glenn Close was widely expected to win Best Actress for The Wife, which was a masterpiece of subtlety, but Olivia Colman took the award for The Favourite, in which she squawked and screamed the whole movie. Both Stone and Colman were directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

Olivia Coleman was great in The Favourite

I bet even Emma Stone wishes Lily Gladstone won

I promise not to make this whole thread about Gaza - but hot d**n it would have been nice for even one of the people who felt compelled to make last night about Gaza to have mentioned the hostages.

Jonathan Glazer spoke to ALL the victims of the current conflict:

It was not appropriate to appropriate a holocaust movie to talk against holocaust appropriation by “the occupation”, especially when the pro Palestinian side absolutely is appropriating the holocaust constantly.

You are not the arbiter or gatekeeper of who gets to invoke the Holocaust. If a Jewish man who produced an Oscar winning movie about the perpetrators of the Holocaust isn’t allowed to make a statement about Holocaust appropriation, I’m not sure who fits your criteria. Probably only those who involve the Holocaust to defend Israel’s attacks on Gazan civilians.

The movie stands on its own, for its own important historical value, especially since Glazer was granted exceptional access and support to tell his story. Given this, any appropriation, from any side, is inappropriate. I am not surprised you make assumptions though.

He has said that the purpose of the film was to draw lessons for today. In fact, that’s basically the main lesson from the Holocaust- Never Again. I’m not sure why drawing those lessons is now called “appropriation.”

Also, the Israeli government itself routinely invokes the Holocaust in defending its actions in Gaza, including at the ICJ genocide trial.

Right. It would be good if some of these people talked just once about the hostages. We know you all hate Israel, blame Israel, etc etc. Just, acknowledge the hostages. Acknowledge them without your "BUT" that comes next, every time. Or even with the but. Just acknowledge them.

They were acknowledged by Glazer when he specifically noted the victims of the October 7th attack in Israel.

No.

Yes and then John stepped in and sort of pulled her off of him. It was very weird and very noticeable.

I didn't notice. I just went back and watched a clip, and I didn't notice because that didn't happen. John reached out and grasped Cillian's arm - didn't touch his wife at all.

Does anyone else think that Michelle Yeoh messed up and forgot to give the award to Emma Stone? Then Jennifer Lawrence jumped in and grabbed it to give to Emma Stone. I don't know what Sally Field was up to, grabbing on to Jennifer Lawrence.

Me too! And I had warm feelings about her before. I did not even think she should have been nominated, not because she was bad in Oppenheimer but because her role was just really minor and not well-developed in the movie. I remember wondering why they bothered to cast a "name" actor in the role because her character was so generic. Though I don't view that as her fault.

But the added exposure from being nominated has not been great for her. She comes off as arrogant and incredibly self-involved. And her clothes have been bad! I know that's shallow but... that's what celebrities are for. If they don't seem charming or interesting or at least have good style, there's no point for red carpets and celeb interviews and such.

No I think she knew Jennifer and Emma are really close friends. I was surprised Jennifer didn’t read Emma’s intro part.

Yeoh explained that she gave the Oscar to Jennifer to give to Emma because she knew they were friends and she thought it would be extra special for Emma to receive the award from a friend. She said their relationship reminded her (Yeoh) of her relationship with Jaime Lee Curtis.

It was still weird but it sounds like it was a nice gesture that just got kind of muddled.
