NVCC to UVA transfer

Anonymous
Hello,

Is this right that kid can take classes at Northern VA college for 2 years, then easily transfer to UVA , VA tech and some other universities, finish two more years and get regular bachelor? I.e. 2 first years at NVCC world equal two years at UVA?

Yes, but for guaranteed admission you need to check the requirements for each school.

Yes but you can’t just take any classes you want. You have to attain a certain GPA in classes the fulfill the transfer requirements. So I don’t know how “easy” it is. I only know one person who attempted it and he did not get the grades for guaranteed admission. Ended up at GMU.

Yes, but the rules are very strictly enforced.

Student Must be enrolled/registered in that specific transfer program, must take all of the specified classes, and must get required grades & GPA.

UVA at Wise with the “Guaranteed Transfer” to C’ville after first year in Wise might be a better option for some students. That is definitely worth looking into also.

I believe UVA has to offer this to you when you apply to UVA initially. You can’t just go to wise and transfer to UVA after a year.

There are a few gotchas. First, you have to be waitlisted at UVA. If you aren't waitlisted, then it isn't open to you. Second, if you need financial aid, then you're in trouble.

"Will any UVA Wise scholarship I am awarded follow me to UVA?
Unfortunately, no. All institutional grants and scholarships are applied to full-time degree seeking students at UVA Wise. If you qualify for federal financial aid, UVA will package you accordingly upon transfer."

What is the advantage of doing NVCC for the first two years other than financial? Or is this strictly financial?

Considered a back door to UVA.

But CC is not a guarantee to transfer... And Wise seems to only work for wait listed at UVA who applied for arts? DS is looking at engineering..

To transfer to UVA from NVCC for Engineering, the student must complete the AS in Engineering degree with the required minimum GPA. I think UVA's is 3.4 for Engineering.

Certain classes are required to get the AS, but there are options for things like technical electives, that have to be carefully chosen depending on which engineering discipline a student wants. Transfer Virginia has good resources for some of the Engineering majors as UVA (and other schools). Here is the link for aerospace for example: https://www.transfervirginia.org/content/uva-bs-aerospace-engineering-transfer-guide

Some students are able to complete the 2 (nvcc) + 2 (uva) plan for their 4 year degree, others may take an extra semester or two. It usually depends on the student, courses taken and the course requirements for a particular engineering major.

NVCC is part of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), so the documents on Transfer Virginia apply to all VCCS schools, not just NVCC.

I think the waitlist issue is only for automatic admission to Wise without specifically applying. The web site does make it seem like you can apply directly to Wise if you want to.

You can apply directly to Wise, but then you don't have the right to transfer after 1 year. The year in Wise is only open to students waitlisted by UVA:

If you are a Virginian placed on the wait list for the College of Arts and Sciences at UVA, you can attend UVA Wise for one year—completing 30 hours of transferrable credit and maintaining a 3.0 GPA—and then transfer to UVA Grounds in Charlottesville to complete your degree. (No additional application to UVA’s College at Wise is required.)

Getting admission to UVa from high school is difficult, while getting into UVa from NVCC is significantly easier.

So what would you do if the choice is between:

1. GMU/JMU for four years
2. NVCC for 2 years plus UVa for 2 years

However, not every NVCC graduate would be able to transfer to UVa. So you may end up with two years at NVCC and two years at GMU.

There are other reasons. The need to stay in the NoVA area to help care for siblings, or an ailing grandparent. Community responsibilities. Etc.
