DD has been exploring options close to home, including community college. But have recently been eyeing https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_the_District_of_Columbia
Do they give alot of financial aid scholarships? How is the program overall for liberal arts.? |
Weird that you inserted a Wikipedia link. UDC is a community college. I actually think the campus in Van Ness isn't bad in the scheme of things, and it's larger than at first appearance if you walk through it. Are you a DC resident? I think there are some free to no-cost programs for DC residents, but nothing for non-DC. I certainly wouldn't study liberal arts at UDC. You want to study accounting or any number of practical majors. I don't believe there are any auto-transfer rights anywhere out of UDC. I would definitely pick Montgomery College or NOVA CC over UDC if those are your in-state options. |
| UDC is a fine choice for the many DCPS students who graduate without learning much and need a lot of remediation. Also a reasonable option for vocational certifications. |
| The District of Columbie!!!! |
No, the Van Ness campus is NOT a community college. |
UDC is not a community college. It *has* a community college as part of the larger system but it is a full university with undergraduate and graduate students. |
Ok, but you don’t have to apply…you just enroll. |
Not true. You do have to apply; they have rolling admissions. And according to USNWR, they have a 61% acceptance rate, which honestly is lower than I expected. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/udc-29100/applying# |

The community college is trash there should be a complete overhaul. Some examples:
Teachers dont grade assignments immediately weeks like 4+ weeks can go by. You might take the second or third exam before you get the grades for the first. Teachers are unprofessional especially for programs where you have to work at an internship. Sometimes you dont learn anything and the teachers just show up and talk on their phones all day. There is a certain group of teachers who will help people who look like them or are from a certain country. Many of the lab classss are trash. You go in and do not do anything. The math teachers in the programs dont really know how to teach math. I am not talking about the math teachers who get you into the programs through prerequisites. Im talking about the math teachers in the programs who have to teach uou a math related topic related to your major. Many of the teachers period are not very strong in their content. You can tell they are just there to get paid. I mean honestly just read your text book and find another teacher you can talk to about how to apply the text book in the real world. Dont go to this school for any program offered through the community college. Its a bad education. |

I got my finance degree from UDC at 36. It was all paid by Federal government after filling out FAFSA. I was poor after all as an eligible immigrant.
I had previously attended Montgomery College. I went back for Masters in ECE at 43. I never worked as a teacher, because financial freedom came few years after I had started investing and while I was finishing the program. I wanted my kid to go to UDC, but he chose NOVA. He wants to transfer to VT, GM, or UVA. He got 30 credits transferred from DCPS to Nova. I know that law school is fine at UDC and so is the accounting department. Finance worked out great for me. I had great math, finance, accounting, literature, and Spanish teacher there. I was lucky to have them at UDC. They were as good as my boarding school teachers in EU if not better. I don't know about the community college part though. I don't see why one wouldn't be able to get out of CC after one year, just like my kid in Nova, and move to Van Ness Campus. All nostalgic now. I loved my time there. I did not care for Montgomery college as it was repeat of my high school, but lower quality. |
