What is wrong with High Point?

Anonymous
My daughter brought up High Point (she likes the dorms and the student center) and I started briefly reading about it. Wow sounds a little like a place to park the rich kid so they get the “paper” and can inherit the family money with a college degree. Anyone have any good stories to share or should I tell my daughter to forget about it?

Nothing. People just like to bash it here. Our public high school counselor for our Sn daughter. it would have been a good place for her but we couldn't afford it. One of my dS's classmates went there and had a wonderful time and great education

Okay the fact that you are positioning it as SN is reflective of the bashing. High Point is a great college. Every kid we know from there is not depressed and gains employment or grad school after.

We toured it and they say all of the things you want to hear as you are sending your kid away from home. When I was driving home my daughter and I both had feelings of apprehension and a lot of questions. How do they afford all of these projects without a big endowment. Why does everyone seem to worship the president of the school (in a cultish way). Honestly feels like a scam..,

If you have tons of money and don't care about diversity (in any form), it's a great place to be.

the niche reviews turned me off entirely. sounds like there are some serious problems with assault and lack of response on campus.

That sounds like a more generous description of the place than how others characterize it. Do truly rich families send their kids to Highpoint?

Friends of ours toured. It was at the top of kids’ list. Came away thinking it was creepy and cult like.

Try Elon as an alternative.

Is this the school where they have a fake airplane and you practice giving business pitches in it?

Truly rich kids are development admits at better schools. High point is for the tier of students who have enough money to afford it without the grades to do better. That being said, SN families seem to love it

I met a bunch of female grads recently. They had real jobs and were all polished like beauty pageant contestants. I get the impression though that it’s a great school for kids who aren’t very academically inclined because there are a lot of supports and focus on other skills that can make people successful. I don’t think it’s a bad thing but it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s also expensive so yes, it would be a great fit for someone who has money but isn’t a great student.

It is bizarre. Has the feel of one of those mega-churches but for college. Way too shiny on the outside, and probably a house of cards underneath the facade.
