Neighbor’s rooster is really frustrating

Anonymous
I live in Fairfax County. My neighbor has a rooster that makes that cockle doodle doo sound all day. It’s getting to be frustrating and depressing. I don’t know what to do. I know another neighbor complained and nothing came of it. I guess there’s nothing that can be done and I’m just venting.

I would think there would be some zoning laws regarding where farm animals can and can't be.

not allowed in ffx. how large is his property? You should complain to the county.

That's absurd. I would complain!!!

I love the sound of a rooster crowing and specifically bought one to enjoy.

If you bought next to a land where it is legal, this is on you.

Look up the zoning law where you live, OP. Where I live, people are allowed hens and chicks only if their property is large enough (they're not allowed with a certain number of feet of the property line, so as not to cause a nuisance to neighbors) - but my neighborhood does not allow roosters!

Why would you think there's nothing to be done?
In FX, no roosters on under 7 acres. No hens on under 2 acres without a permit.
Go to this link and click on the PDF flyer for rules and how to complain.

BTW, I support backyard chickens and think the rules should be looser (IMO, should allow a handful of hens on residential lots if your unpaved yard is above a certain size) but fools with roosters ruin it for everybody.

I would 1000% take a rooster over a barking dog. All day, every day.

No you wouldn’t. You would hate it too. OP, call the county to complain.

It depends on the rooster and the dog, PP. I agree there should be rules for habitual barkers, and I agree with the no-roosters rule. Noise pollution is a big deal in urban and suburban areas.

Also: no gas-powered leaf-blowers or lawn-mowers! Get with the times and reduce your noise pollution!

I've stayed at a place with a rooster. It was actually kind of great. There is nothing, ever great about a barking dog. I get that lots of people won't like a rooster, but it's unquwstionalby better than a barky dog.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a cock-a-doodle-doo rooster too but that’s when I’m in a farm. It just different in the city. But aside from my like or dislike, it’s against the law, so my pleasure or displeasure of a rooster doesn’t matter.

The point is, some roosters aren't as well-behaved as the one you heard. OP says the one she has next door is loud all day.

Oh that sounds miserable, I feel for you.

They can both be terrible or no big deal, just depends.

I currently have neighbors with multiple dogs and they when they leave them alone, one or more of the dogs just barks continuously until they return. We live in a condo building and their unit is right above mine and the dogs sound like they are in my apartment. I HATE THESE NEIGHBORS. So much. They actually are not supposed to have three dogs in an apartment (they are not little dogs, either) but they claim that two of the dogs are emotional support animals and the building manager is afraid to challenge them because they don't want to get an ADA violation citation.

But the dogs only bark when they are out of the house, at least. A rooster might crow all day long regardless, which I could imagine might be worse depending on how close the rooster is to your home.

The upshot of all of this is that the world is filled with terrible, inconsiderate a$$hole neighbors who also happen to be terrible pet owners. It sucks!
