| Based on a meeting with my boss, where she asked me to save things to a certain folder, prepare a summary of projects I’m working on, and submit my expense report, followed up by a chat saying not to worry about finishing up one project, I suspect I am being fired tomorrow. I’ve been here less than a year and on a PIP since Jan (this was not a good fit) and I’m freaking out. I’ve never been fired before. What happens? What do I need to know to get a job going forward? I’ve been looking but it’s easier to get a job when you have a job so I’m just kind of panicking |

I'm sorry OP. Yes, it sounds like you are getting let go.
Make sure your resume is in a great spot. Be gracious on your way out. Don't burn a bridge. Move quickly on applying to jobs. Apply to everything you can. Good luck!!! |

They will probably ask you to sign something in order to receive severance. The document may be looking for your agreement/ recognition of shortcomings so they can prove you were fired for cause. It may be useful to ask for a letter from your manager on company letterhead verifying your dates of employment and maybe salary in case a future employer asks for proof of employment and you don't want them to call and get the run around.
I am not in HR, so all of this is with a grain of salt. Hopefully someone trained in this will weigh in, too. Good luck |

Make sure you've saved copies of your important contacts and any work product that you don't want to never see again.
I've been there. It stinks. The good news is that you already know it's not a good fit, so hopefully you've been thinking about what you want to do next already. When it happened to me, DCUM was actually really helpful. One piece of advice was to take a little bit of time to breathe, if possible. I did that, while also working my network. It was the right call. So I would give that advice, too, if you can do it. Take a minute to breathe, if you can do it. It's going to be hard, and you'll get through it. Apply for UI right away. |

If you have any personal stuff on your computer or in the office, now is the time to clean it up. You likely won’t have access to it once you’re let go.
I would ask HR how your system will reflect your departure and what they will say to a future employer- many places these days will only confirm dates of employment. It might be too late, but ask if you can resign in lieu of being terminated. You won’t be eligible for any unemployment benefits but at least you’ll never have to worry about saying you were let go. Agree with PP about not burning bridges on your way out. Good luck! |
| I'm sorry OP. I know how you feel right now. I've been fired once before, but I was blindsided by it and was not prepared for it. I wish I had not freaked out and just left, but like the other comment said, Get a letter from your boss (if possible). |
| I’ve been fired or not renewed from every job I’ve ever had. It sucks but you carry on. |

I was fired after 10 months on a job for no discernible reason other than my boss, who had been super complimentary of my work for the first six months or so, suddenly did a 180. She started lying about things she did to make them look like they were my fault and changing the parameters of assignments after I was almost done to tell me that's not what she asked for. I was in tears almost every day after work and came close to quitting for my mental health when I was suddenly fired.
I had to sign an agreement not to sue or disparage the organization (I SO much want to write a Glassdoor or Indeed review but can't) to get my severance. On the upside, I was able to get unemployment fairly easily, although it was aggravating to have to keep repeating that, yes, I was fired for cause throughout the application process. I found some freelance work and landed a new job within two months with totally normal, nice people. I'm still there three years later and just got the full amount of a large-ish raise I asked for. OP, I'm hoping if you do get fired, you'll bounce back fairly easily, too. |
| Ask if they can give you one month notice to look for another job. I was given 3 months where I wasn’t paid but technically still employed for reference purposes. |
public trust background check specifically asks about resignation in lieu of being terminated. i'm not sure the semantics matter any more. what were the terms of the PIP? were you meeting them? I'm sorry, OP. take a min or two to breathe, and then work on your resume and give yourself a job of job hunting. aka, make sure you get up and out of bed every day by 10am, and spend at least a few hours a day finding job listings and crafting a resume geared toward each individual listing if you can. I've been let go or RIFed a few times, and it really hurts, but you have to try to not take it personally no matter how personal it feels in the moment. |
| Why not apologize to your boss and sort it out. You are new, need more learning, mentoring and experience. Everyone deserves second chances. Ask what you can do to improve and show her your will and effort to improve. |
| You'll live, learn and bounce back. |
Umm she was already on an improvement plan and did not get any better. The second chance is gone. OP, do as others have said, but also, you need to reflect. Why were you on a plan to begin with? What exactly was or still is the issue? Saying you were not a good fit is not going to cut it. |

Take home as much of your personal stuff today as you can. Tonight, update your resume saying you worked at this place through March 2023, and tomorrow morning at work print like 20 on nice paper at the office, for in case you have to hand someone a hard copy in future interviews. Confirm you can have health insurance through the end of the month. Then go back to your desk and make any dr appts you need, and beg them to fit you in before you lose health insurance (they'll understand and do what they can).
Make sure you have the contact info of anyone you want to keep in touch with. THey'll fire you, you'll leave. Go home and apply for unemployment. Take the weekend to cry, On Sunday night, apply for jobs. On Monday morning apply for jobs. |
| Lol don’t tee up your firing. screw em. Don’t organize all your things to make their life easier. |
