What Are the Best Private High Schools for "Alpha Male" Types?

Anonymous
My DS is a real extrovert, but he's also an A student and good all-around athlete -- plays a lot of sports. Really excels at baseball and golf. He's in seventh grade now. Thinking about privates beginning in 9th. Location isn't a huge issue -- we live close-in Bethesda.

TIA

This should be in the Landon forum...

Which part of this makes him Alpha? How does he dominate?

OP here. We're not considering Landon -- he's not a blowhard or musclehead, but he has a real competitive streak in him.

Don't send him to STA. Landon sounds more appropriate.

That OP labels her own son "alpha" says a lot about herand th type of school she chould choose.

Baseball and golf are same season in IAC (which includes STA) but not in MAC (boys league that Sidwell plays in). Depends on if you want him to play both sports for his school. Obviously co-ed vs all-boys is a big distinction around here. Despite what some may say, smart athletic boys will do well everywhere-that's our culture. You might drop the word "alpha" as it gets people going.

Sidwell could handle Alpha. But so could a lot of schools. I agree you want to drop that term, as it will start people posting about schools they think "create" Alphas (and that's in the derogatory sense).

OP, why are you considering privates and why in 9th.? Sounds like he's doing fine where he is. If you really want the private school experience, I'd suggest getting him on that road now. No matter how much of an extorvert, A student, all-around athlete, and ahem, "alpha male," he is, at the school that would fit the bill, St. Albans School, he'll likely find himself just like everyone else. 9th grade could be a tough transition year. Give him time to get acclimated and start him earlier. Also, STA has an exceptional baseball team. Many boys go on to play at major colleges. So, if his (your) dream is to have him play high school baseball, you may want to first go through an honest assessment of his skills. All that said, the way you describe your son, it sounds like he'll be a good fit at STA. But do leave that "alpha male" reference at the door. You'll just cause a lot of STA parents eyeballs to roll if you ever said that out loud.

Please send the alpha male to Landon. He'll be very happy.

You might want to assess how critical it is to him that he be the "top dog". Some schools have A LOT of very smart, very athletic boys - will it spur him on or discourage him if he isn't always the best?

If the kid is in 7th now, and in 8th this coming school year then 9th is the next possible entry point. Nothing wrong with starting in 9th. Most of the schools expand in 9th with fairly large new groups so it's not at all unusual. I'd suggest Gtown Prep (not a booster and my DS didnt like it when he visited, but it seems like a great fit with what you are describing. Plus everyone is new in 9th).

OP,
These schools are so different ... I'd visit as many as possible next fall and see how they impress you and where you see your son going. If it's doable bring him along because he will surely have an opinion about where he's going to go. Does he have any inklings from say friends in area privates? Oh he may surprise you. My child loved Maret, I did not. Funny how that works!

Agree, your son is old enough to have a preference.

BTW, I would refrain from describing your son as an "alpha" male in the future.
