2023 and older girls parents - question about recruiting / 2nd tier list

Anonymous
For parents who have been through the recruiting process before, I was curious as to how often kids on the "second tier" list eventually get offers? I realize probably never for a UNC/BC/MD level school; but what about a #10-30 ranked program? Like many 2024 kids/parents we are pretty anxious right now but wanted to be prepared for what to expect on Thursday and beyond. Thanks in advance.

I would assume that most if not all of the D1 attention is now swinging completely away from 23s and onto the 24s going forward. Some D2 and D3 are still recruiting 23s, however, throughout the fall but it is challenging as the rising seniors have little or no playing opportunity except to attend prospect camps.

I am a 2024 parent. I am asking 2023 and older parents for their experience. Sorry it wasn't clear.

Also for veteran recruiting parents: if a college coach initiate a call to speak to your daughter's club/high school coach prior to 9/1, does that typically result in a phone call directly to your child in early Sept?

I would not associate the top 10-30 schools with “second tier”. Assuming schools take on average 8-10 players per class you are talking about the top 240-300 players in the 2024 recruiting class. My DD had several players from her team commit to top 30 programs late into the Fall and into Winter.

Apparently I am not phrasing my question clearly. I am not saying that #10-30 are 2nd tier. I'm saying if my kid is on a school's 2nd tier list how likely is it that she will get recruited by said school?

For parents of 2023 (or older) - did any of your girls get recruited by a top 30 program where your daughter was originally not on their top tier list?

Any D1 school in the top half of rankings most likely has five players targeted for each position and will reach out to all five next week.

2021 Parent here - daughter got calls and/or texts from maybe 7 or 8 schools 9/1 and probably 4 or 5 were very serious. The ones where she was told they want to keep watching her or she was #x on their list I advised her to not hold out hope. This is certainly all dependent on other factors (cost, academic profile, geography etc.) but all thins being equal if a school your daughter thinks is a good fit and they seem very interested pursue that vigorously. The chances of a girls on a second tier list for a school getting an offer are not great, it won't be as much money and she will always know, as will they, that she wasn't a primary target.

No one size fits all here though because if you have the money and it's an Ivy League school you may want to wait.

My DD had interest from several top 30 schools that were not on her original list. While she appreciated their interest she was quick to thank the coaches for their interest and let them know she was pursuing other opportunities that align better with her overall interests. Coaches really do appreciate this. It’s flattering to know top 30 coaches are interested, but if the school(s) are not a good fit academics + location + lacrosse as a professional courtesy let them know early and move on. I hope for your DD gets the call she wants, but if not be prepared to pursue the options that align with her interests first. Don’t jump at a school just because they are a top 30 program.

Assuming your player created a reasonable list of target schools last fall that was vetted by club/high school coaches and then she followed up with them regularly throughout the year with film updates and tournament schedules and copied club/high school coaches and some of them were on the sidelines at games, then you would hope that the correct "tier" of schools has been established and that some of those coaches have made recent calls to the club/high school coaches to gather more info. In our experience they will communicate intentions such as I will reach out on September 1, I will make contact in September, or She is on our board. Sometimes coaches will reach out directly to the player without having talked to current coaches first but the current coaches are a good gauge of how September is likely to play out.

After they run through their initial lists and the feeding frenzy quiets down there is definitely a second round to fill holes but usually not at the top programs and possibly not at schools your player would want to attend outside of playing lacrosse, is is harder to make a great match in the second round, obviously, as there are still many more interested players than slots left. You can also check a school on Inside Lacrosse recruiting to see exactly when the previous year players committed to get an idea of how many were after the fall but every year is obviously different. Good luck it can be a stressful time.

there is always the "walk-on" status at this point. Coaches will give spots to the players who showed interest and commitment to their programs. After offers are all out and some of the players did not receive any from their desired school they are left to scramble. Coaches will place them on a roster without any financial or admission help, but if they can play they will save a spot for them if they get in. Scholarship later on after proving themselves on the field is absolutely available as all scholarships are written year to year.

Great post. One more piece of advice is to act quickly. If you get an offer from any school in your daughters top 5. Jump at it.

Often a scenario like this unfolds. A coach may be recruiting for 2 defenders. She make 4 offers and the first two to accept get them.

Remember offers can be pulled like that if a similarly talented girl commits.

Jump on it, you mean commit? How much pressure does the school put on you to commit after they offer? Isn't it reasonable to take official visits to 3-4 schools first?

2023 parent here. I know this does not make sense but official visits usually happen later after the class is already recruited but prior to signing day. They usually get all the recruits together for the official visit. You could do an unofficial visit after an offer but it better be quick because there are five players on the list for that slot that are all viewed almost or equal in talent to your DD. If you wait they will offer another players it moves fast.
