| If I move out of bounds (still in DC) for my ES, but the principal allows me to stay at the school until my child graduates, does that mean I can stay for the MS that it feeds to? Whose discretion is this and how would I register each year? |
| no you don't get feeder rights to the middle school. The principal can let you stay for the terminal year, then you are done. |
| It’s not at someone’s discretion but more that no one cares to check. It’s a gamble you have to be willing to take. |
discussed this with our ES and DCPS officials and they all said I have the right to the feeder. the language also says on DCPS website the same thing. I want to move but of course to the feeder school would be the IB. And it ain't deal. |
No it doesn't. It all clearly says you get to stay though the terminal year of your IB if you move OOB. Not you have feeder rights into the MS. If you live OOB and you lottery into an ES, you get feeder rights to the MS regardless of where you live. |
| I’m just keeping it real. The registrars do not keep track of which kid is IB or OOB. Thus all 5th graders info is sent to feeder middle school. I can assure you this is how they do it at Deal. When Deal gets the records they don’t have a way to determine whether you came in as an OOB that lotto’d in or a one time IB that moved OOB. |
I get that there are tons of people breaking the rules. I am simply stating what honest people SHOULD be doing. |
It’s not about breaking the rules. Because Elementary schools don’t have away to differentiate IB that moved a few years ago and OOB, the middle school of record will be that feeder school. |
| But don’t you have to re-enroll your kid for MS and probe residency? |
plus 1 and I've also seen on the DCPS site as PP has said. no time to show you now sorry. |
The residency proof is DC, not boundary. |
This is correct from when I looked one year ago. Your kids stays with his/her cohort as they move to the feeder middle and high, regardless of where you end up living in DC. There might be some stricter rules for attendance if your child is out of bounds but still in the feeder pattern. But I am not sure on that. |
| We will be in this situation in a few years. We are actually fine with either middle school (Hardy or Deal) but would rather our kids stay with their friends. I've heard from others in this situation that they were able to enroll their kids with their cohorts and did not have to enroll in their IB middle school. I'll report back in 4-5 years. |

From the current handbook: https://enrolldcps.dc.gov/sites/dcpsenrollment/files/page_content/attachments/SY22-23%20Enrollment%20and%20Lottery%20Handbook%20FINAL_0.pdf
"Where a PK-12 student has been attending an in-boundary school and then moves out of boundary while remaining in the District of Columbia, the student has the right to attend their new in-boundary school. The student may also continue to attend the current school through the end of the school’s terminal grade. All families are required to notify the school of any change of residence within three (3) school days of such change. After the terminal grade, the student has the right to attend the in-boundary school assigned for their next grade based on their home address and can apply to schools outside of the boundary via the My School DC lottery. They will lose their right to attend their old in-boundary feeder school and will need to use the My School DC lottery to apply as an out-of-boundary student to attend that school. For information on options where a student moves out of the District of Columbia, see page 34." Based on the above, the student may continue to attend through the terminal grade only. Terminal grade (per the handbook) = the final grade that a school offers, e.g., grade 5 for elementary schools, grade 8 for PK-8 education campuses and middle schools, and grade 12 for 6-12 education campuses and high schools. |
