Affordable housing prices + good schools

Is there anywhere in MD that is not insanely far away from DC (1 hour commute max) where the public schools are decent AND you can get a single family home for 500k? Preferably somewhere that isn’t vastly majority white.

So nowhere?

We already tried the long commute and it took a serious toll on our physical and mental health. Can’t do that again.

No. At least not up to the high school level. Sorry.

the two things most directly driving home prices are commute and schools. If you check both of those boxes, the area will be popular and likely expensive. There may be somewhere at the edge of that hour commute in Frederick, but you are adding minority white to the criteria, so that box probably won't get checked

Nowhere in Frederick is an hour commute into DC, at least not any time M-F on any kind of day shift. I live here, it's sad but true.

How long is the commute during rush hour? My commute used to be 2 hours in the afternoons where we lived previously.

Bowie MD has decent schools (we would send our kids there) and ticks your other boxes.

And Greenbelt zoned for Greenbelt middle school

I also think North Laurel could be an option.

Hammond High and Reservoir are decent schools with diversity. You will be pushing the boundaries of your commute and your budget, but I think you can find something in there.
