Getting accepted to Holton-Arms

Anonymous
Can anyone that has been accepted at Holton-Arms in the past tell me what your WISC-IV and ERB scores were?
Anonymous
I would to know too! Also please include grade.

My daughter went to Holton and is now at an Ivy. She started there in 7th grade. Honestly, I don't remember her score...but I know it wasn't high enough for NCS. Holton is just as good or better (according to WSJ rankings) -- so if your girl has done well in school and has some passions -- she should do fine with acceptance. Good luck! It's worth the effort there at Holton.

What grade?

In the past few years it seems that most who apply to Holton get in and many of those choose other schools.

PP Really? So it isn't very competitive to get into Holton? How do you know this?
Anonymous
I'm not the pp, but my daughter went to Holton. Whether or not it's as difficult to get into as NCS -- I can say it's very difficult with respect to the coursework and homework. Check out their website for a story about 2 women grads now in their 30s -- one just wrote a prominent book about women in politics and the woman interviewing her from CBS was also a Holton grad. WSJ ranked Holton higher than NCS by the way. The school is not for the faint of heart.

Disagree with pp who says it is not competitive to get it. Our neighbors have a wonderful daughter, very athletic and verbal, who did quite well on her tests (don't know exact scores, but the Mom is an independent school teacher and was thrilled with the #s) and did not get in to Holton. Did get in to Norwood, St Andrews, and NCS; chose Norwood. This was for 5th grade.

Perhaps there weren't that many 5th grades slots available. We are applying for 3rd Grade and that is the grade that they take in the most girls at one time. In the interview the AD said that it is pretty competitive to get accepted even for 3rd Grade.

I think 3rd grade is one of the hardest grades to get into Holton. There aren't a lot of spots compared to the number of people interested in getting one. The very powerful VIPs and legacies general apply for 3rd grade.

Good luck!

Holton may not be as competitive to get in as the DC schools because it is in the suburbs, but it is just as challenging as any of the biggies. They do a fine job. The reason some people might not go after being accpeted might be that it is single sex.

I don't think anyone is disputing that Holton is challenging. OP (and me) really would like to use this board to calm our nerves as we try to determine based on this informal poll, how likely it is for our daughters to be accepted. We all realize on some level this is absurd, but if posters would indulge us by answering the original question, we would be very grateful.

PP -- my daughter was one of the ones Holton took a chance on. She did horribly when she started at Holton in middle school and ended up at an Ivy. To try to calm your nerves as you requested - know that Holton takes more risks than its top competitor-- NCS. There is nothing wrong with NCS -- it's great. But, Holton is even better for the work it does to take girls from less than stellar backgrounds and turns them into total superstars. It is magical to watch and people will jump all over me who don't know how it works there.

We would need to know a few things about your daughters: what grade are they vying for; do they have any special talents besides test scores; did they do well in school; are they coming from a school Holton has accepted girls from in the past; diversity ?; able to give big at fundraising time; able to donate your time/goods/services?; is your daughter a good writer; does she like to read? Anything else we can know that will help your case? Great letters of rec? Rec. from an alum? Holton will look at all of these factors. Some girls apply several different years and end up getting in by high school if not sooner. Good luck!
