Getting accepted to Holton-Arms

Bet she's modest too.

DD currently in 8th. Scored in the mid 80% on WISC but ISEE scores were lower. Decent grades but not great. Came from public, very outgoing, kind and engaging girl.

So I keep hearing recently that it is pretty much impossible to get admitted to Holton for 3rd grade if your DD doesn't do test prep for the ERB test. It sounds so ridiculous to do that to a 7- or 8- year old girl, but I know that Holton puts a lot of stock in this test (their AD said as much during our interview). But all that means is that instead of screening the girls based on their ability, they are really just screening them based on the parents' ability (and willingness) to make their girls go through a couple of weeks of test prep. Sorry, but we don't have that kind of time on our hands. Needless to say, I don't hold out much hope, even though our DD is pretty bright and has a good WISC result and good grades.

Not all parents prep their kids for the test. My DD got in 3rd grade and I did not prepare her one bit. Actually, I knew she was taking a test, but I didn't know it was the ERB. We had gone to so many schools and each school gave their own test. She did really well on her test at Holton, probably because I didn't make a big deal about it. I just told her to do her best. You should just let her take it, don't talk much about it and she will more than likely do great! Good luck!!

We did not have our DD prep for ERBs; DD did not do well. She got in to Holton. DD had a strong WISC results, very good grades and strong recommendations; I think her morning at the school (where the girls collaborate with other candidates and Lower School staff) was successful. My understanding is that Holton looks at the whole girl and does not just look at the ERB scores.

09:01, what were your daughter's scores like? We are not planning to have our daughter prep for the ERB either.

Your DD's profile sounds strong and I would think she's have a very strong shot of getting in. Per your description of your DD, she sounds great. An active, engaged, outgoing kid will do well anywhere. It's not all about test scores.

I have noticed that Holton really likes girls from Fairfax County Public Schools. Not sure which district you are in, but the girls from FC do really well and tend to be in advanced classes.

48 hours if you paid for online notification and 2 weeks if snail mail

ERB and ISEE are one and the same, right? If that's the case, I received the score on Friday (took the test 6 days earlier on Saturday). Didn't pay extra so it was by snail mail.

Pretty timely I think!

We did the test at Holton a couple of years ago, and it took maybe a week to get the results back.

Daughter bombed the ERB. 99th% Wisc. Thriving at Holton. Really an excellent school.

My daughter did really bad in the ERB but had excellent score on WISC. Came out of visiting day happy. Got in. She is thriving at Holton!
Admission people explained ERB can reflect her previous school's teaching, so not to worry if the other areas are good. Of course, that being said it is very competitive since there are a lot of wonderful girls applying.
In the waiting period I just thought, if they want her and she is a good match she'll get in. You also want THEM to want you!
GOOD LUCK

Interested to hear what you all say are "bad" ERB scores so I can have some type of measurement.
