Mcps families generally don’t agree. Look at how few signed the petition. Common sense is early. If your kids are not in activities, sure but for those of us whose are. The only common sense schedule is the early start. We should deny our kids the ability to pursue their interest because you refuse to parent and send your entitled kids to bed earlier? |
Yes, most MCPS parents understand the common sense compromise that was reached to enable older siblings to provide aftercare. This matter was settled. Not sure why they keep brining it up. It's definitely time to move on. |
There are many MCPS parents who didn’t have kids in school a decade ago, and the majority of the ones who did have kids in school back then didn’t have kids in high school. It’s a new crop of high school parents who care about now and the next few years, not the past. A later start time still might not be feasible, but people are free to advocate for the changes they want. |
The petition has been heavily advertised and only 940 signatures. That’s not very many. |
And it's not like MCPS changes school schedules based on a random petition. That's not how change works in school systems. THe organizers need to go to a board meeting and get a clue. |
It helps depending on what. The fact that few signed it says a lot. |

Then when are activities? What time are games? |
It has? Didn't see it until very recently. |
If the biggest priority for your family and your child is a later start time, consider the Virtual Academy. They can wake up, roll out of bed and start their class. Starting times are about the same but you're eliminating the hour plus of getting ready and transportation. Also, if your child is in high school, there are options for half day schedules or taking classes at MC which will likely have later start times. There's options out there if you want to sleep in, but the whole system is not going to change for you. |
And why exactly should the system adapt for YOU? |
For a district with 160k students it's insignificant. I think most people know this matter was settled and is a dead horse. |
It is not settled. Parents that did not have MS and HS students then do now. |
