Students also work or are caregivers for siblings after school.

I can only imagine what would happen if he got home from after school activities even later than he does now because school doesn't start until later.

IMO, it's about their body clock. HSers naturally sleep later.

DC told me that most of the kids in 1st period are half asleep. Their grades suffer. DC had math first period last year. Didn't do so well. They have it now at 4th period, more advanced math class, and doing a lot better because they said their brain is awake by then.

I wonder if a lot of HSers academic performance would improve if they started later.

My spouse went to school in Europe, and they started at 9am.

If sports is the issue, they can always practice in the morning before school. Why do non athletes have to go to school early just because a small minority of kids want time after school for athletics.

Academics > sports.

So it's fine for athletic teens to make their body clock suffer but not for non-athletic teens? How does that make sense?

Being a student is in the law. Is it to be an athletic teen?

Why can't you switch ES start times with HS or Middle?

Elementary starts 9am or 9:30
Middle 8am
High 7:45am

ES students sleep earlier in the night. If you switched ES, the little ones would get out at 2:30p. still problem for families working a 9-6 schedule. But doable with after school activities until 3:30.

Seems easy enough to change the start time!

Badly.

This is how it makes sense: academics > sports.

Sports is optional; school is not.

You are saying the majority should suffer for the minority.

I think the down county consortium should test this approach and use a later start time at one of the DCC high schools. The density of ES is high enough here that you might even be able to free up the right number of busses by give people a choice between a late vs early ES. This would let MCPS test the idea without forcing anyone into it. If enough people want it, you can grow the number of schools doing it and if it causes issues or no one actually wants to live with what a later hs start time means, they can discontinue it.

Why? What has changed since 2013? Do we have more money for more school buses and drivers? Do students not play sports or work after school anymore? Are older siblings no longer responsible for younger siblings? Does the sun rise and set at different times?

You know what? It’s good practice for high schoolers to be prepared for 8am classes in college or the workforce.

How about HS 9:00a-3:45p. Is that really too late to start practice for athletic teens?
