HOPE ratings - pls post

My child received 1 always, 7 almost always and 3 often on the HOPE ratings and exceptional talent in math, visual arts, reading and social studies. I'm relatively pleased but was of course hoping for higher. It is an interesting look at how the school views your kid, and I would definitely recommend that everyone request the packet. I was hopeful that the HOPE scores would show more comments from the teacher / school committee. It seems like the old GBRS had more of an emphasis on comments and painting a picture of the student, where this form seems rather bland.

Test scores are a mixed bag -- very high in verbal but not as high in the other sections, although still good. I am expecting that test scores, although good, will keep my child out on first round and that we will need to appeal with a higher WISC score.

Any thoughts on how those HOPE ratings will be viewed?

Based on others' posts and prior years' GBRS scores, I think your child has a great shot if they have 135+ NNAT and CoGATs.

Our school isn't giving them out yet.

Wow, that's great. Your child seems like a shoo-in for AAP.

Can people who received their packets share the dates on their HOPE forms? Ours was done in the first quarter, which surprised me since my understanding is that the packets weren't even submitted until February.

Our date is 2/16/2024 -- so presumably right before the school sent it off to the central committee. First quarter seems odd -- how did they even know then that your child would either be in pool or parent referred (unless due to a teacher absence / maternity leave, they were trying to rate every child in that teacher's class ahead of time)?

Our date is 2/15/2024, so similar to the above.

Our school does packets annually, including GBRS last year, but in late spring when they evaluate the whole school for level II and level III. I think doing it annually is FCPS practice, but I had no idea some schools do it in first quarter? And then don't update it for a level IV application?

They say that having a good AART makes a difference, but that is next level different compared to everything else I've ever heard. If the packet's not great I'd absolutely be prepared to question it.

Our date is in early December, which also surprised and confused me. I don't understand why the teacher would fill it out so early.

Exactly it makes me doubt the entire process of teacher's inputs. I'm not sure how any teacher would be able to analyse the child's traits only by knowing them in first quarter given my kids class strength of 32 kids . I could see many times the teachers have given my DD 3 's in Progress reports in the first quarter stating the same reason that they need time to decide whether they perform well or this year the teacher herself is pretty new to FCPS so he has always been in training sessions in the first quarter with substitutes assigned to the class most of the time . so how come she would have enought time to evaluate the kid ?.Both are contradicting .

They aren't filling out all of the HOPE ratings on 2/15, right before the packets are sent to central committee. That's the date the packet got printed or they pre-dated it knowing that's the week it would be sent out. All of the referrals are filled out in Dec/Jan based on 1st quarter data, and any pertinent info from 1st grade. They know who is parent-referring b/c the parent referral is due mid-dec, then they get to work on preparing the packet.

Mine had a December date that was before parent referrals were submitted. My child was not in pool either.

They may be doing them for all students. Either way, At our fall parent-teacher conference, the teacher asked if we planned to refer. DC ended up being in pool but we didn’t know that then and said we were. She marked him down to start creating a file.

These tests do not offer the best criteria for selection. They need to do away with them to be more inclusive in the approach anyway.

That’s why it’s now a holistic process but they shouldn’t do away with testing completely bc it does serve a function in identifying need. They’ll likely do away w NNAT but CogAT will stay.
